Spike TV renewed its original series Deadliest Warrior for a third season that launches next summer with ten new episodes. During the first two seasons, the series averaged 1.6 million total viewers. In an 8-K filing on Friday, Discovery Communications said it will increase its funding investment for OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network set to launch on January 1, 2011. Discovery’s commitment will bump to $189 million up from the previous amount of $100 million. The revised agreement also pertains to Oprah Winfrey’s on-air involvement which will now include her hosting or starring in a show on OWN. Previously, Discovery indicated Winfrey would be featured in a primetime travel series, Oprah’s Next Chapter airing two to three times per week premiering late in 2011. Discovery’s added funding for OWN will be a revolving loan direct from the company and/or debt financing from a third-party lender to OWN, based on the 8-K. The filing also said OWN will be allowed to pursue distribution in the UK and Canada.

A&E Network set the premiere date of Teach: Tony Danza for October 1 at 10p. The seven-episode, one-hour series follows actor Danza as he becomes a first-year teacher at Philadelphia Northeast High School, the city’s largest urban high school. Prior to becoming a prolific television actor, Danza earned a degree in History Education. The series will document Danza’s trials and rewards as he teaches a 10th grade English class in addition to helping the football team, the band and the debate team as well as organizing a successful fundraiser for the school. Lorene Yarnell, who with former partner Robert Shields made up the mime/dance/comedy team Shields and Yarnell, died on July 29 at her home in Sandefjord, Norway. She was 66. Along with Mr. Shields, her husband at the time, Ms. Yarnell headlined the television variety show Shields and Yarnell which aired on CBS in 1977-1978. Ms. Yarnell and Mr. Shields later starred together in “Broadway Follies” in 1981 at the Nederlander Theater in New York. The show closed after one performance following poor reviews. Ms. Yarnell also appeared in the Mel Brook 1987 film Spaceballs playing the robot Dot Matrix. Later in the mid-1980’s Ms. Yarnell and Mr. Shields divorced. Survivors include her fourth husband, Bjorn Jansson and a brother.

John Aylesworth, co-creator of one of the longest-running television series, Hee Haw died July 28 in Rancho Mirage, CA.  He was 81.  Hee Haw, a variety show filled with country music performances and slap-stick, corny humor, ran on CBS from 1969 to 1971 then in syndication for a further 22 years.  Mr. Alyesworth and his long-time friend and co-creator partner, Frank Peppiatt served as producers and writers on Hee Haw.  Mr. Aylesworth also was a writer/producer for other TV shows such as Your Hit Parade, The Kraft Music Hall, The Judy Garland Show and The Jonathan Winters Show.  Mr. Aylesworth and Mr. Peppiatt were part of a writing team nominated for Emmys for The Julie Andrews Hour in 1973 and The Sonny and Cher Show in 1976. A book penned by Mr. Aylesworth, The Corn Was Green: The Inside Story of Hee Haw was published by McFarland this year. He is survived by five children and one grandchild.

  • Searching for Happiness – Executive produced, hosted and narrated by Goldie Hawn, this documentary explores mankind’s quest for happiness.   • Tent City – Executive produced by Gabriel Byrne and Leora Rosenberg, this documentary examines homelessness in Nashville. In Tent City, viewers will meet a community of almost 100 homeless people who live under a downtown bridge. This group is self-sustained and self-governed and for the first time the city’s Homeless Commission has opened one seat on its council to a resident of Tent City and the documentary follows four candidates as they vie for the election which means a more positive move for the camp.   • Seven Suicides – An original documentary following Mariel Hemingway, granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway as she discovers the legacy of suicide and depression in her own family.
