HBO moved quickly to renew its new series Boardwalk Empire for a second season after the drama debuted Sunday night. Boardwalk Empire’s Sunday at 9p premiere gave the premium cable network its largest debut audience in more than six years (since March 21, 2004 when Deadwood premiered with The Sopranos lead-in). Boardwalk Empire averaged 4.8 million viewers for the first airing at 9p. Additional airings of the show’s opener at 1015p and 1130p, was watched by a combined 7.1 million viewers for the night.

E! announced it is expanding its weeknight E! News program from a 30m format to a one-hour show beginning October 25 at 7p. Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic will continue as primary anchors for the show which will also sport a new set in addition to more reports and exclusives emanating from the show’s team of correspondents. Personalities featured on E!’s Daily 10 news series will become a part of the nightly show and E! News will now include branded segments from Daily 10. The E! News website at E! Online will further re-launch featuring new interactive elements, more 24/7 breaking news and exclusive video content.

Starz announced actor Andy Whitfield, star of Spartacus: Blood and Sand will not continue in his role for the series’ second season, scheduled to begin in September 2011. Whitfield’s doctors have advised the actor to resume an aggressive treatment regimen for a recurrence of cancer. Starz has not made any decisions about the future of Spartacus: Blood and Sand though the series’ prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena will continue to air in January 2011.

CBS’ comedy series The Big Bang Theory extended its production hiatus due to series star’s Kaley Cuoco’s recent off-set injury. Cuoco broke her leg in a horse accident and originally was written out of the plot for one week, followed by a previously scheduled one-week production halt. Cuoco is still recuperating from her accident in an L.A. hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

In the process of completing their list, they help strangers along the way achieve a dream of their own.

Film and television character actor, Harold Gould died last Saturday in Woodland Hills, CA. He was 86. Mr. Gould is most recognized for two of his television roles. In the 1970s, Mr. Gould played Martin Morgenstern, the father of Rhoda Morgenstern (Valerie Harper) the best friend of Mary Richards (Marty Tyler Moore) on both The Mary Tyler Moore Show and the spin-off series Rhoda. Later, Mr. Gould regularly appeared on The Golden Girls as a dashing widower who courted the constantly befuddled Rose (Betty White). Mr. Gould earned a Ph.D. in dramatic speech and literature from Cornell and taught acting in college before he became a professional actor. He appeared on stage and in numerous films including a memorable turn as the dapper con artist Kid Twist in The Sting (1973) and as a Russian count in Woody Allen’s Love and Death (1975) among other roles. Mr. Gould became a familiar face on television for nearly five decades appearing on such classic shows as Dennis the Menace, The Donna Reed Show, Hazel, Perry Mason in the 60s; on Hawaii Five-O, Police Story, Family, Soap, The Love Boat and more during the 70s; on St. Elsewhere, L.A. Law and Nightcourt in the 80s; on Dallas, Lois and Clark and Felicity in the 90s; and in this century on The King of Queens, Judging Amy and Cold Case. Mr. Gould is survived by his wife of sixty years, Lea Shampanier; a daughter, two sons and five grandchildren.

Respected broadcast journalist, Edwin Newman, 91, died August 13 in Oxford, England. Mr. Newman was with NBC News for 32 years and was considered a master journalist excelling as a newsman, a commentator and a revered critic. Mr. Newman received the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award in 1966 for his radio news broadcasts. He is survived by his wife, Rigel and a daughter, Nancy.

Film critic Roger Ebert returns to PBS with his weekly film review show, Roger Ebert Presents At the Movies. Ebert, who is not able to speak due to his battle with cancer, is co-producing the half-hour show with his wife Chaz Ebert and, using a computer voice, will appear on each episode in segments titled Roger’s Office. The updated program will be co-hosted by Christy Lemire, the film critic for the Associated Press and Elvis Mitchell of NPR. The duo will use the copyrighted “thumbs up/thumbs down” format created by Ebert and Gene Siskel. The series will premiere in January 2011 and launch nationally on PBS stations with WTTW/Chicago as the presenting station. WTTW was also the original presenting station when Ebert’s show began in 1975 known then as Opening Soon at a Theater Near You.

A&E Network premieres a second season of the real-life series Steven Seagal Lawman on October 6 at 10p with back-to-back episodes. In the new eight-episode, half-hour series, Seagal continues as a Sheriff’s Deputy on duty in Jefferson Parrish, LA with viewers watching Seagal and his officers responding to crimes-in-progress. The second season will also delve more into Seagal’s personal life that he shares with his wife and new son, his philanthropic efforts and his expertise in weaponry and martial arts. David Dortort, 93, creator of the classic western TV series, Bonanza, died September 5. Bonanza ran on NBC for 14 years from 1959-1973 and was the most-watched show on television during the years 1964-1967. Mr. Dortort also created the show The High Chaparral that also aired on NBC for three seasons. Mr. Dortort also wrote episodes for such series as Lassie, The Restless Gun, Climax! and Waterfront. Over his career, Mr. Dortort received three Emmy nominations. He also served as president of the Producers Guild of America and was president of the Television-Radio branch of the WGA. Mr. Dortort is survived by a daughter, a son, one brother and a granddaughter. A service will be held at noon on Sunday at Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries in Los Angeles. Instead of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Writers Guild Foundation and the Venice Family Clinic.

TLC offers a new six-episode series, Say Yes to the Dress: Big Bliss opening October 1 at 9p. In addition, TLC said it is bringing back a sixth season of Say Yes to the Dress, also taped inside Kleinfeld Bridal. TLC ordered 18 new one-hour episodes which will debut in February 2011. Both series are produced by Half Yard Productions for TLC.

Logo has set the premiere date for its new docu-reality series, The A-List: New York on October 4 at 10p. Logo’s new nine-episode series highlights the glamorous lifestyles of some of New York’s gay elite men as they juggle high-profile careers in Manhattan then whisk away to their luxury weekend vacation spots. The one-hour show is produced by True Entertainment, an Endemol Company that also produces Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta series.
