Barbara Billingsley, who played the often parodied though revered June Cleaver on the television series Leave It to Beaver, died on Saturday at the age of 94 at her home in Santa Monica, CA. Ms. Billingsley played glamorous June, the mother who wore pearls and high heels at home and baked endless cookies, from 1957 to 1963 and later in decades of reruns. The role of June Cleaver set a standard for television in post-WWII America and Ms. Billingsley was known to have only respect for her iconic TV role. In real life, Ms. Billingsley was a former model and during her busy acting career, married three times and had periods of being a single working mom to her two sons. Before taking the TV role that she would be known for ever-after, Ms. Billingsley was a contract actress with MGM in the 1940s and early 1950s and appeared in small film roles in Shadow on the Wall (1950), Three Guys Named Mike (1951) and The Bad and the Beautiful (1952). Later, she had a revival in her career by appearing in the 1980 comedy film Airplane!, playing a sweet passenger who talks in “jive” with two street-smart characters. Ms. Billingsley also returned to television in the 1980s by making guest appearances on shows such as Mork & Mindy, Amazing Stories, The Love Boat, Murphy Brown and Roseanne among others. She was also the voice of the “nanny” in the animated series Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies. In 1983, Ms. Billingsley reprised her role as June in a television movie, Still the Beaver where she was together again with many of the cast members of the original Leave It to Beaver cast, though Hugh Beaumont, who played her TV husband, Ward had died earlier in 1982. This TV movie then led to a cable series of the same name and later became known as The New Leave It to Beaver. She further had a small role in the 1997 film Leave It to Beaver. Ms. Billingsley is survived by her two sons, Drew Billingsley and Glenn Billingsley.
