NBC News’ Today co-host Meredith Vieira may exit the morning show in June, close to three months before her contract expires, reports THRAnn Curry, Today’s newsreader will be promoted to co-host alongside Matt Lauer and correspondent Natalie Morales will assume the role as newsreader.  THR reports Vieira has been considering a departure from Today for some time and made the decision this week based on apparent personal reasons to spend more time with her family.  Vieira took over as co-host of Today in 2006 when Katie Couric departed.

Two days prior to The Oprah Winfrey Show’s finale on May 25, the show’s producers, Harpo Productions is planning a Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular filled with celebrities from the realms of film, music and television.  The two-part show has been in the works for weeks and Oprah herself doesn’t know who will show up.  The special editions of The Oprah Winfrey Show will air May 23 and 24 and will tape at Chicago’s United Center on May 17.

Chuck Lorre, co-creator of CBS’ Two and a Half Men, is developing a new version of the sitcom for the network, giving it a fresh creative direction sans former star Charlie Sheen.  Lorre apparently presented a plan for the revamped show to close associates and co-star Jon Cryer, upgrading Cryer’s role and introducing a new cast mate, as yet uncast.  CBS and the show’s production company Warner Bros. Television is aware of Lorre’s plans. To date, neither CBS nor Warner Bros. have said if Two and a Half Men will be back for a ninth season.

Yesterday Katie Couric made it official saying she will leave her anchor position with CBS Evening News when her contract expires June 4.  The timing of Couric’s departure announcement allows the network a month to introduce a new evening news anchor.  CBS News will likely reveal Couric’s replacement next week following its coverage of the Royal Wedding with Couric anchoring in London.  Though what exactly Couric will do next is still up in the air and that announcement is expected in the next few weeks.

New 30m sketch-comedy series, In the Flow with Affion Crockett hosted by and starring comedian Affion Crockett will premiere on FOX August 14 at 9p with a special one-hour episode.  Late-night airings are scheduled for Saturdays at midnight starting August 20 and the series will slide into its regular time slot of 930p Sundays on August 21.  The series is billed as similar to FOX’s classic In Living Color and Crockett’s new show, executive produced by Jamie Foxx will offer spoofs of pop culture, movie trailers, commercials, TV shows, music videos and celebrities.  Many guest stars will appear during the season including Snoop Dogg, Russell Simmons, Chris Brown and Harry Shum Jr. among others. Tyler Perry lands another new series on TBS as the network ordered the 10-episode dramedy series Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse aiming at young adults.  The series is based on Perry’s popular films Why Did I Get Married? and is his third series for TBS which also airs Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and Meet the Browns.  Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse centers on the married life of Marcus and Angela, two characters from his films Why Did I Get Married? and Why Did I Get Married Too? Michael Jai White and Tasha Smith will star in the television series reprising their roles from the films.  Other cast members will be announced later. For Better or Worse will follow the syndication pattern of Perry’s other two TBS series and will be sold by Debmar Mercury.  Atlanta-based Tyler Perry Studios is producing the series.

In less than a month after its premiere, Showtime renewed its drama series The Borgias for a second season.  Ten new episodes starring Jeremy Irons as patriarch Rodrigo Borgia will begin production this summer for a 2012 debut.  The premiere episode pulled in 3.71 million total viewers for Showtime taking multiple platforms into consideration including on demand, encore airings and DVR.  The Borgias will continue as a Canadian-Irish-Hungarian Treaty co-production.  May 22 at 10p is the scheduled date/time for The Borgias’ season one finale.

Pop culture icon and legendary martial arts actor, instructor, composer, film director Bruce Lee will be highlighted in a new six-episode original series Bruce Lee Lives! premiering on FUEL TV July 17 at 10p.  Each half-hour episode examines Lee’s life which ended in 1973 at the age of 32, through personal stories of various filmmakers, musicians and athletes he influenced such as Ryan Phillippe, Carlos Santana, Chuck Liddell, Criss Angel, Omar Epps among many others.  The series, produced by Pangolin Pictures, also features never-before-seen interviews and videos of Lee’s own work.

Lange will play their nosy neighbor.  Ryan and Murphy are reworking the script to make Lange’s role a third lead position.  20th Century Fox Television is producing.

TV Land is developing a spinoff to Hot in Cleveland starring Cedric the Entertainer, reports Variety.  Later this month, Cedric will guest star on Hot in Cleveland playing a minister. Following this appearance, Suzanne Martin, the show’s creator and executive producer will work with Cedric on a pilot script for a spinoff featuring the minister character.  If TV Land top executives Larry Jones and Keith Cox approve the script the show will likely be ordered to series without filming the pilot.

Reports are circulating another high-profile broadcast anchor may soon leave her post. Meredith Vieira is expected to exit her position as co-host of NBC’s Today show when her contract expires later this year.  Vieira has served as co-host of Today since 2006 when she replaced Katie Couric.  Nothing official has been stated by either Vieira or NBC News.

Despite news about her pending departure from CBS News, the network said yesterday Katie Couric will lead its live coverage of Britain’s Royal Wedding later this month on April 29.  The Early Show co-anchor Erica Hill will also contribute reports from outside Buckingham Palace on the wedding day and later that night, Couric will host a one-hour primetime special titled The Royal Wedding: Modern Majesty.  Couric will arrive in London and begin her reporting on April 27 while Hill will co-anchor The Early Show from London starting April 25.

A new game show, Repo Games, described as part Cops and part Jeopardy debuts on Spike TV April 26 at 8p.  The original, unscripted game show from 495 Productions is hosted by real-life repo men Josh Lewis and Tom DeTone as they visit the homes of unsuspecting debtors bringing five trivia questions.  If the debtor answers three questions correctly, their car will be paid off immediately, though if they fail, the car will be hauled off to the impound lot.  During season one Repo Games will travel to Dallas and Los Angeles.

On April 21, Food Network opens a second season of 24 Hour Restaurant Battle at 10p.  The one-hour series follows two teams that have 24 hours to conceive, plan and open their own dream restaurants for one night.  Chef Scott Conant hosts the series and challenges the participants while he along with a rotating panel of judges, tally each team’s efforts.  Judges for the sophomore season include Geoffrey Zakarian, Marcus Samuelsson, Ben Leventhal, Gabriella Gershenson, Alison Brod, David Sax, Drew Nieporent and Tim Gannon.  The winning team will receive $10,000 in seed money toward their dream restaurant business.

AMC and producer Lionsgate officially made a deal with Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner to continue as showrunner for the series’ previously announced fifth season as well as a sixth season.  Weiner inked a new long-term agreement with Lionsgate which points to a possible seventh season of Mad Men, the 1960s original drama set in New York’s advertising world.

Betty White and NBC are partnering on a new hidden-camera comedy series Off Their Rockers produced by Kinetic Content.  NBC ordered a dozen 30m episodes of Off Their Rockers which is based on an international series titled Benidorm Bastards, originally produced by SHELTER in Belgium.  The premise of the series follows a group of seven senior citizens as they play pranks on unsuspecting young people. Distributor SevenOne International has sold the series to more than 20 territories including France, Italy, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and South Korea.   For the US version, White, Kinetic Content’s Chris Coelen, Matilda Zoltowski and SHELTER’s Tim Van Aelst will executive produce.  White is no stranger to NBC after having starred in a seven-season run of The Golden Girls for the network and a recent hosting appearance on SNL which earned her another Emmy.
