Gugu Mbatha-Raw, formerly on the drama Undercovers, landed a role on FOX’s drama pilot Touch starring opposite Kiefer Sutherland. Mbatha-Raw will play a social worker with child and family services who analyzes the father’s (Sutherland) autistic, mute son’s living conditions. Danny Glover was also recently cast as the son’s teacher and David Mazouz will play the son. Production on Touch is held up because of Sutherland’s starring turn on Broadway in the revival of That Championship Season. FOX will likely then launch Touch in midseason.

Disney/ABC Domestic Television will distribute the new, as yet untitled talk show slated to debut in September 2012. Jeff Zucker will serve as executive producer of the series based in New York and produced with Disney/ABC. To date, the eight ABC O&Os in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh/Durham and Fresno have cleared the Couric talk show for the 3p time period, which you know now is home to serial General Hospital. ABC said it will give back the final hour of its Daytime block to affiliates no earlier than September 2012. The Chew this September and The Revolution in January 2012 are scheduled to air 1-3p. As part of the ABC News team, Couric will contribute to all programs and platforms and starting this summer will anchor specials, conduct interviews and be involved with special events coverage.

Legendary actor James Arness died on Friday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 88.  Mr. Arness was best known as the dutiful lawman Marshal Dillon of Dodge City, Kansas on the series Gunsmoke, one of the longest-running scripted programs in television’s history.  Mr. Arness starred in Gunsmoke for 20 years, from 1955 to 1975. The role and the real-life man at times merged into one as Mr. Arness seemed made for his part on Gunsmoke whose own steady and stoic personality was much like that of Marshall Dillon.  During his time on Gunsmoke, Mr. Arness was nominated for three Emmy Awards.  Over his fifty-year acting career, he also appeared in nearly fifty films and television movies, mostly western-themed.  He appeared in thirty films before his mentor John Wayne turned down the Dillon role and recommended him instead.  Later following Gunsmoke, Mr. Arness appeared in such television movies as The Alamo (1987) and Red River (1988) as well as the miniseries How the West Was Won (1977) and the crime series McCain’s Law (1981).  He also starred in five Gunsmoke television movie sequels from 1987 to 1993.  Mr. Arness’ younger brother was the actor Peter Graves, best known for his iconic role on TV series Mission: Impossible and numerous movies including Airplane! (1980). Mr. Graves died in 2010.  Mr. Arness is survived by his second wife, Janet and their son Rolf Arness; a stepson, Jim; and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Preceding Mr. Arness in death was a daughter, Jenny, from his second marriage and a stepson, Craig, he adopted from his first marriage.

Stretching out the season, NBC added an extra live results show for The Voice on June 22 and slated June 29 as the show’s live season finale. So far this frosh season through May 31, The Voice is averaging a 5.5 rating with A18-49 and 12.6 million viewers, per Nielsen. The most recent episode hit a high note at 14.4 million total viewers. NBC further said The Voice is returning in midseason on Monday nights from 8-10p as a lead-in to the new musical series Smash. The Voice was also selected to air in the coveted slot following NBC’s live Super Bowl telecast next February.

In other NBC news, the network is resuscitating reality series Fear Factor which ran on the network for five years starting in 2001. Paul Telegdy, head of alternative programming for NBC, saw sister network, Chiller pull in solid ratings with Fear Factor reruns which prompted NBC to consider reviving the show and discussing a comeback with the show’s production company Endemol USA. It has not been announced who will host the re-issued show or when it will premiere.

Actress Clarice Taylor recently died at the age of 93. Ms. Taylor is best known for playing Bill Cosby’s television mother, Anna Huxtable on the family comedy The Cosby Show which earned her an Emmy nomination in 1986. Ms. Taylor also played the character Harriet on the PBS children’s show Sesame Street for 14 years. Other acting credits include roles in films such as Play Misty for Me, Sommersby and Smoke as well as a stint on Broadway in The Wiz.

Showtime see-sawed with renewal news yesterday as the premium network canceled United States of Tara starring Toni Collette after the third season concludes this summer. Despite Collette winning an Emmy in 2009 and a Golden Globe in 2010 for her role as a mom who suffers from multiple personalities, viewership for the comedy has decreased over its run. For the current third season premiere 411,000 total viewers tuned in compared to the second season launch with an average of 816,000 total viewers. On the flipside, Showtime renewed its dark comedy Nurse Jackie for a fourth season headlined by Edie Falco. The third season of Nurse Jackie is presently averaging 2.8 million viewers each week.

A new weekly docu-series is on the docket for MTV called Caged about a group of recent high school grads struggling to break out of life in small-town America. The young people, growing up in Louisiana, turn to amateur MMA fighting as a way to gain pride and recognition in their world. Caged is from MTV’s News and Docs department and is executive produced by Joke Fincioen and Biagio Messina of Joke Productions; Dave
Sirulnick and Amy Bailey are executive producers for the network.

MTV also approved a second season of World of Jenks from documentary filmmaker Andrew Jenks. The new season of World of Jenks will see its episodes expanded to a full hour and a new approach for the storytelling focused on the journeys of three young people and their experiences over a six-month period. Jenks serves as executive producer of the series; Dave Snyder was co-executive producer this season. Brent Haynes and Brooke Posch are executive producers for MTV.

The Borgias on Showtime ended its first season Sunday at 10p by tallying 810,000 viewers though for the night clocked in at 1.12 million total viewers. The Borgias was recently renewed for a second season with 10 new episodes slated to commence production this summer for a 2012 premiere.
