Making it official as of yesterday, Harry Smith moves to NBC News from CBS News to become a correspondent, effective July 18. Smith will contribute reports to NBC’s upcoming primetime hour-long news magazine program anchored by Brian Williams. Smith has been in the news industry for more than 30 years and hosted the CBS News morning shows The Early Show and the former CBS This Morning for 17 years. Most recently, he was a senior correspondent for CBS News and a substitute anchor for CBS Evening News, Face the Nation and CBS News Sunday Morning.

Culinary competition series, The Great Food Truck Race gears up for a new second season on Food Network starting August 14 at 10p following the finale of Food Network Star. Tyler Florence hosts the series where eight top food trucks in the US compete for a grand prize of $100,000. The food trucks spend one weekend in each city featured, selling from their mobile kitchens as well as competing in various challenges. Special guest stars during the sophomore season include Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts and NFL Hall of Famer John Elway. Fans as well as advertisers stepped up in an effort to save cancelled ABC daytime dramas All My Children and One Life to Live. It was announced yesterday both soaps are saved with a new licensing agreement involving media and production company Prospect Park. Disney/ABC Domestic Television Group brokered the deal which allows Prospect Park to continue production of the soaps. Prospect Park will produce and deliver the daytime dramas using their current formats and one-hour length via online platforms and to internet-capable TVs. All My Children is ending its run on ABC September 23 and One Life to Live in January. “I’m just so happy that ABC found a home where the legacies of All My Children and One Life to Live can continue. I’m excited for their future with Prospect Park,” said Agnes Nixon, creator of both shows.

Soon after its series launch, TNT already has renewed Falling Skies for a second season with 10 episodes. The new second season will premiere in summer 2012. Before ABC’s All My Children signs off this fall, Carol Burnett will appear in a handful of episodes reprising her role as Verla Grubbs in September. Burnett’s character first appeared on the soap in 1983 as the long-lost daughter of Langley Wallingford, played by the late actor Louis
Edmonds. Burnett was back on the soap in 1995 for AMC’s 25th anniversary and in 2005 for its 35th birthday in addition to hosting AMC’s 25th anniversary primetime special. After appearing as a guest star in NBC’s The Office season finale, James Spader is in negotiations with the network to apparently join the sitcom’s eighth season next fall. Spader, as character Robert California, would not actually replace Steve Carell as Dunder Mifflin’s manager but instead take over as CEO of Dunder Mifflin, replacing Kathy Bates who also stars in Harry’s Law on NBC. At this time, no deal has been worked out with Spader and no scripts written to include his character for the upcoming eighth season which commences production in approximately a month.

Following the sudden death of Ryan Dunn (MTV’s Jackass) in a car accident early Monday morning outside Philadelphia, G4 decided to take its series Proving Ground, co-hosted by Dunn, off its schedule. G4 said the show is removed from its lineup until discussions about the show’s future can happen. Dunn was 34 years old and news about his accident and death broke yesterday morning on the Philadelphia radio talk show, The Preston and Steve Show on WMMR.

Staying on top of the auction genre, Spike TV renewed its non-scripted original series Auction Hunters for a third season consisting of 26 episodes. The series shadows Allen Haff and Ton Jones as they travel the country seeking hidden treasures in storage units. For season three, the duo hits new areas of the US as they travel to Anchorage, Washington, D.C., New York City, New Jersey, Hawaii, Denver and Los Angeles. The upcoming third season will also include one live episode slated to air in early 2012 watching as Allen and Ton reveal the contents of a storage pod.

HBO and Darren Star teaming on a comedy project called The Viagra Diaries inspired by the book by Barbara Rose Brooker. Star is writing the script starring Goldie Hawn as a woman, who after her husband has a mid-life crisis at the age of 65 and leaves her, struggles with being single again for the first time in 35 years. If the series is picked up to series, this marks the first regular TV series project for Hawn since 1970. Hawn is executive producing along with Aaron Kaplan and Wendy, Peter and Alan Riche.
