Steve Carell is going into production work with Showtime, serving as executive producer on the new comedy series, Laughing Stock. Mnet, the 24/7 English-language network showcasing Asian pop culture is casting for an English-speaking K-pop VJ to host a new daily two-hour K-pop television series debuting on the network this fall. The national search invites all K-pop fans to apply. No prior television experience is needed though candidates should have loads of energy and personality-plus and also have a large knowledge of everything K-pop. Season three of NBC’s a cappella competition show The Sing-Off will sport a new judge as Sara Bareilles joins Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman for the new season opening September 19 at 8p. Bareilles replaces Nicole Scherzinger and she appeared on the show’s finale last season. NBC has opted to make The Sing-Off a weekly competition show versus running a slew of eps in one week. In doing so, the show has doubled its number of episodes to 11 (up from five last season) and also a total of sixteen groups will now compete which is six more than last season. On Monday, TeenNick launched its late-night The ’90s Are All That block featuring four 1990s shows airing from 12a-2a. The two-hour block averaged a 1.3 rating and 417,000 among A12-24, representing a +225% increase compared to the previous year. The new block, consisting of All That (1996), Kenan & Kel (1995), Clarissa Explains It All (1992) and Doug (1991) also delivered an average rating of 0.6 and 229,000 viewers with A18-34 which is a +500% increase. Tuesday night’s season six finale of A&E Network’s series Gene Simmons Family Jewels at 10p finished with 1.7 million viewers with A18-49 and 1.9 million among A25-54. The sixth season of Gene Simmons Family Jewels became the most-watched season ever for the series with an average of 1.2 million A25-54; 1.1 million A18-49; and 1.8 million total viewers. Univision Network is launching national auditions for its new reality competition show Protagonistas (Novela Stars) premiering October 12. Produced by Univision Studios and Imagina US, the show invites young men and women from across the US to compete to become Univision’s next on-air Protagonista or novela star. The competition gives young actors the chance to make their onscreen network debut.
