A new singing competition series, Duets is set to premiere this summer on ABC. Kelly Clarkson, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Nettles and Robin Thicke will travel across the country seeking undiscovered talent. Each star will select two singers to be become duet partners. The duet partners will be on stage each week and perform in front of a live studio audience until in the end only one duet act wins a recording contract. Duets is a production of Keep Calm and Carry On Productions.

Joseph Varet and Morgan Hertzan, co-founders of LXTV made a deal to acquire lifestyle network Plum TV, currently reaching 5 million affluent viewers in eight markets. This purchase of Plum TV follows a bankruptcy auction in the Southern District of New York. Hertzan and Varet will serve as Co-Presidents with Hertzan based in New York and Varet in Los Angeles. Plum TV will operate as a national network with the goal to expand distribution via digital, television and out-of-home media. The focus of Plum TV will remain on home, travel, food and wellness. The CW ordered three new reality series for its summer schedule which will join the network’s previously-announced game show Oh Sit!. NBC is placing Community back on its schedule starting March 15 and also released the premiere dates of three other new series: Bent starring Amanda Peet will debut March 21 at 9p from Universal Television and Rosalita Productions; Betty White’s Off Their Rockers after its sneak preview last month will officially open April 4 at 8p; and new female buddy sitcom Best Friends Forever, headlined by Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham from Universal Television and American Work will also launch on April 4 at 830p. With the return of Community, NBC is retooling its Thursday night lineup beginning March 15 with Community, 30 Rock, The Office and Up All Night. Parks and Recreation will be off for a six-week hiatus after its March 8 episode airs, coming back April 19 at 930p following Up All Night’s 24-episode first season run. In other NBC scheduling news, Rock Center with Brian Williams will move to 10p on Wednesdays beginning March 7 for five weeks and then return to the 9p slot on April 11. Law & Order: SVU also is back with new episodes at 10p starting April 11 until its season finale on May 23.

Comcast is partnering with GMC TV and entrepreneur/NBA Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson to launch a new African American network called Aspire. The network will showcase a combination of original and acquired programming including movies, documentaries, short films, music, comedy, visual and performing arts as well as faith/inspirational programs. Johnson will serve as Chairman of Aspire and he was awarded one of four, new and minority-owned and operated independent networks from Comcast. ASPIRE will go live this June and will be based in Atlanta. Pop singer and film star icon, Whitney Houston, 48 died on Saturday in Beverly Hills, CA. Ms. Houston was in Los Angeles to attend a pre-Grammy Awards party hosted by Clive Davis, the founder of Arista Records and the man considered to be her pop mentor. Throughout her singing career, Ms. Houston used her lush, three octave singing range to achieve hit after hit and her 1987 album “Whitney” became the first female album to debut at #1 on the Billboard Charts. Ms. Houston won numerous awards for her singing talent including six Grammys Awards. In 1992, she transitioned to becoming a movie star starting with her first film role in The Bodyguard, followed by other starring roles in Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher’s Wife (1996). Ms. Houston also played the role of the Fairy Godmother in a TV movie version of Cinderella (1997) for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award and most recently she had a role in the upcoming film Sparkle currently in post-production and considered a comeback vehicle for the singer and actress. Ms. Houston also won a Primetime Emmy in 1986 for her Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program for The 28th Annual Grammy Awards on CBS. From her marriage to Bobby Brown, Ms. Houston has one surviving daughter, Bobbi Kristina now 18. Ms. Houston is also survived by her mother. In addition to her many awards, BET honored Ms. Houston with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Debra L. The National Boards of the ScreenActors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (AFTRA) have taken major steps toward a merger. On Saturday, AFTRA’s board voted 94% in favor (6% disapprove) to recommend a unification plan with SAG. Before that on Friday, SAG’s board voted in favor of the merger plan by 87.1% (12.9% disapprove). The next move will see members of AFTRA and SAG vote on the merger after February 27. More than 60% of members need to approve the merger in order to create one new aligned union called SAG-AFTRA. Currently, AFTRA oversees more than 70,000 actors, broadcasters, singers and dancers while SAG oversees 120,000 members.

Robert Hegyes, best known as “Sweathog” Juan Epstein on the 1970s sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter died last Thursday in Edison, NJ. He was 60. Mr. Hegyes appeared on the ABC sitcom which ran from 1975 to 1979 playing Epstein, the Sweathog who was always late sporting excuse notes signed “Epstein’s Mother.” Following Welcome Back, Kotter, Mr. Hegyes had a recurring role on the 1980s CBS crime drama Cagney & Lacey and in later years he acted in regional theater and had guest roles on CHiPs, L.A. Heat and Diagnosis Murder. Mr. Hegyes also taught for several years at Venice High School in California where he told interviewers he had a reputation for accepting no absence excuses of any kind.

Longtime television comedy director, John Rich died on Sunday in Los Angeles at the age of 86. Mr. Rich directed 81 episodes of All in the Family in the 1970s and prior to that directed the 1950s sitcoms I Married Joan starring Joan Davis and Our Miss Brooks starring Eve Arden. Mr. Rich won two Emmy Awards, one for directing and one for producing, both for All in the Family, as well as a third Emmy for directing The Dick Van Dyke Show. Mr. Rich was also granted the Director Guild of America’s highest honor, the Richard B. Aldrich Achievement Award in 1993 and was recognized for his contributions to television with an Honorary Life Member Award in 2003. Mr. Rich is survived by his wife, Patty; three children and eight grandchildren.
