Music industry legend and TV host, Dick Clark died yesterday at the age of 82. Mr. Clark’s agent said the longtime host of American Bandstand died following a “massive heart attack.” Considered a trailblazer in the pop music genre, Mr. Clark’s career began in radio, first as a disc jockey at the student-run station at Syracuse University, then for his family’s radio station. In 1952, he landed a job as DJ at WFIL in Philadelphia where he hosted a show called Dick Clark’s Caravan of Music. Soon after, he launched the first Bandstand as an afternoon dance show for teenagers. Within a few years, ABC took the show national and called it American Bandstand with the weekly format showing clean-cut boys and girls dancing to the latest hits and newest singles. Many of the music greats appeared on American Bandstand from Elvis Presley to Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Chubby Checker. In 1963, Mr. Clark moved to Hollywood and founded Dick Clark Productions which was behind many popular TV shows such as $25,000 Pyramid, TV’s Bloopers & Practical Jokes and American Music Awards. Then in 1972, New Year’s Eve was forever changed on television when Mr. Clark launched New Year’s Rockin ‘ Eve and Mr. Clark hosted the show that became a New Year’s Eve tradition for three decades. The Museum of Broadcast Communications estimates Dick Clark Productions has produced more than 7,500 hours of television programming, including more than 30 series and 250 specials in addition to 20+ movies for theatre and television. Throughout his career, Mr. Clark earned numerous awards from Emmys to Grammys, an induction in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. Considered forever young, people marveled at Mr. Clark’s youthful appearance through the years which earned him the nickname “America’s Oldest Teenager.” Mr. Clark is survived by his third wife, Keri Wigton who he married in 1977 and his three children.
