The NFL and CBS forged a new deal encompassing a nine-year broadcast rights agreement through the 2022 season allowing CBS Sports to remain as the broadcast home of the NFL’s American Football Conference (AFC). Furthermore, the NFL’s increased “flexible scheduling” will allow CBS to broadcast games from the National Football Conference (NFC), marking the first time CBS will broadcast both AFC and NFC games in the same season. CBS additionally gained the broadcast rights to four future Super Bowl events including Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans in 2013, Super Bowl L in 2016, Super Bowl LIII in 2019 and Super Bowl LVI in 2022. This deal also has the distinction of being the longest pact made between the NFL and its broadcast partners.

When NBC’s thirteenth season of The Biggest Loser makes a comeback on January 3 with a two-hour premiere at 8p, the participants arriving at the ranch will be in teams of two. Teams comprised of mother/daughter, father/son, brother/sister and husband/wife will arrive together though will be matched up with other participants and competing with the person they came with. TV and movie actor, Harry Morgan, best known for his beloved role as Colonel Sherman T. Potter on the television series M*A*S*H died in Los Angeles at the age of 96. In addition to his iconic role on M*A*S*H, Mr. Morgan starred in the television series Dragnet, Pete and Gladys and The D.A. as well as more than 100 films. Despite his busy acting career, Mr. Morgan was quoted as saying Col. Potter was “the best part I ever had.” Mr. Morgan won an Emmy Award in 1980 for his role as Col. Potter. He also continued playing Col. Potter in the spinoff series, AfterMASH which lasted two years. In the latter part of his career, Mr. Morgan had guest star roles in such shows as 3rd Rock From the Sun and Murder, She Wrote. He is survived by his wife and three sons.

Cable’s longest-running animated series South Park got an extension to remain on Comedy Central for three more seasons. The new deal between Trey Parker and Matt Stone with Comedy Central assures the series will serve up original episodes through 2016, marking its 20th season. The duo’s current deal takes South Park through 2013. Parker and Stone will continue their present duties with the show as writers, directors and editors. South Park just wrapped its 15th season last night which averaged more than 3.5 million total viewers per episode. Comedy Central first premiered South Park on August 13, 1997.

Yesterday NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution updated its clearance status for new national syndicated daytime talk show Steve Harvey that is premiering in fall 2012. The one-hour talk show produced by Endemol USA and hosted by TV personality/comedian/radio show host and author, Steve Harvey has been sold in more than 70% of the US representing 40 of the top 50 markets. Steve Harvey was sold to station groups including NBC Owned Television Stations, Fox Television Stations, CBS Television Stations, Hearst Television, Cox Communications, Capitol Communications Company, Sinclair Broadcast Group, Local TV and Lin Television. A spin-off series of Mob Wives is in the works at VH1. The network is in pre-production on the new series Mob Wives: Chicago slated to air next spring. Casting for the four main cast members is underway and VH1 ordered 10 episodes. The sophomore season of the original Mob Wives is due to premiere on January 1 and VH1 is bumping up its order from 10 eps to 12. The first season of Mob Wives, airing last April through June, averaged 1.3 million viewers per episode. Weinstein Co., Electus, Left/Right and JustJenn Productions are behind Mob Wives.

Early next year, it is likely CBS will revamp its third-ranking morning show, The Early Show transforming it into a two-hour news show. More details on the proposed morning news program are expected to be announced in New York tomorrow. CBS’ new program will focus on hard news and use a conversational format such as MSNBC’s Morning Joe or ABC’s The View. Charlie Rose and Gayle King, who has long been associated with Oprah Winfrey, will join other new hires and The Early Show’s current co-hosts, Erica Hill and Jeff Glor on a new studio set that is under construction at CBS’ headquarters on West 57th Street in New York. Rose, who has contributed to CBS News’ 60 Minutes, will co-anchor the 7a hour with Hill. King will co-anchor the 8a hour with Glor where CBS also intends to feature specific correspondents. - Kuzmic’s new show The Ambush Cook will premiere December 3 at 12p with double episodes airing for three consecutive weeks for a total of six episodes. The Croatian-born Kuzmic, who was once a single mother without a job, shares her passion for cooking as she ambushes people and takes them to her kitchen for an intervention in home cooking. Yesterday the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said Eddie Murphy has decided to not host the upcoming 84th Academy Awards. Murphy’s decision comes soon after his creative partner, Brett Ratner pulled out as producer of the Academy Awards following fallout from the inflammatory remark made by Ratner over the weekend. In a statement Murphy said, “First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.” The Academy Awards will be televised live by ABC from the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center on February 26.

Retired President/CEO of Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., Daniel B. Burke died on Wednesday at his home in Rye, NY. He was 82. Mr. Burke served as President/CEO from 1990 until his retirement in 1994 and before that was President/COO of Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. since 1972. As a distinguished media industry leader, Mr. Burke spent more than 30 years at Capital Cities starting in 1961 as GM of WTEN/Albany. He was elected as VP of Capital Cities in 1962 and in 1964 became GM of WJR-AM/FM in Detroit. Mr. Burke later was appointed EVP/Director of Capital Cities in 1967 and a short time after was named President of the Publishing Division from 1969 to 1972. Mr. Burke and his long-time friend and business partner Tom Murphy became nationally well-known after Capital Cities acquired the American Broadcasting Companies (ABC) in January 1986. At the time, the deal was the largest non-oil merger in business history. Two years following Mr. Burke’s retirement, Capital Cities/ABC was sold to The Walt Disney Company. Many civic achievements and activities comprised Mr. Burke’s career including serving as Director of The Partnership for a Drug-Free America and Chairman Emeritus of New York Presbyterian Hospital (now Columbia Presbyterian). In 1990, President George H.W. Bush named Mr. Burke to the Hungarian-American Enterprise Fund and he additionally served on the board of directors for several organizations and companies including his alma mater, the University of Vermont, The National Urban League and Morgan Stanley Group, Inc. among others. Following his retirement, Mr. Burke established a minor league baseball franchise, the Sea Dogs in Portland, ME. Mr. Burke is survived by his wife of 54 years, Harriet “Bunny” Burke, four children and fourteen grandchildren. A visitation service will be held at the Graham Funeral Home in Rye, NY on October 30 from 3p to 7p and the funeral will be at St. Martha Church in Kennebunk, ME on November 1 at 11a. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to Maine Medical Center, The Partnership for a Drug Free America or the Naomie Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center.

Reality series The Buried Life was canceled by MTV after airing two seasons, reports EW. The show followed four friends as they traveled the country helping strangers achieve their dreams while crossing off ambitious and sometime sweet activities off their personal bucket lists. MTV will apparently maintain a working relationship with the team in a
different capacity.

Renee Zellweger is partnering with Lifetime on the development of a period drama series titled Cinnamon Girl. Set in the turbulent late 1960s/early 1970s Los Angeles, Cinnamon Girl is a coming-of-age drama centering on four girls, Cassie, Lola, Penny and Lou. Zellweger created the project along with Anthony Tambakis (Warrior) and the plot will delve into the characters’ lives during the era’s political, artistic, social and sexual revolution. Zellweger, Tambakis and Gavin O’Connor will serve as executive producers while Zellweger and Tambakis will co-write the story with Tambakis writing the script. O’Connor will direct and Danny Bramson is also on board as producer and music supervisor. This is the second time Zellweger has teamed with Lifetime with the first project being the 2008 original movie Living Proof with Zellweger serving as executive producer.

Lifetime is also working on a second possible period drama series about William Wilkerson, the founder of The Hollywood Reporter. Johnny Depp’s company, Infinitum Nihil and GK-TV, the television division of Graham King’s GK Films are on board to produce the project which is in the early phase of development. Depp would be on board as a producer through his company along with GK-TV’s Craig Cegielski. Rob Cooper will write the script.

Former High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale will headline a new multi-camera comedy in development at ABC titled Under Construction. The project would star Tisdale as a young woman whose independence is curtailed when she has to move back home while her father renovates her recently purchased “money pit” in addition to her life. David Holden is writing and will serve as co-executive producer along with Tisdale and Jessica Rhoades and Relativity’s Tom Forman. Warren Littlefield will also be involved as executive producer. ABC Studios is producing.
