Tuesday night’s 2nd Presidential Debate drew an average of 65.6 million people, according to Nielsen. The town-hall style debate between President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney, which aired live from approximately 9p to 1045p, was down 2% from the first presidential debate earlier this month though it delivered +4% compared to the second presidential debate between President Obama and Sen. John McCain in 2008. Twelve networks carried Tuesday’s debate: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Telemundo, Univision, PBS, CNN, FOX News Channel, MSNBC, Current TV and CNBC. Among the broadcast networks, NBC led with 13.8 million total viewers, followed by ABC with 12.5 million, CBS at 8.9 million and FOX with 4.6 million. On the cable news networks, FOX News tallied the most at 11.1 million with CNN next at 5.8 and MSNBC at 4.9 million.

Animated series, Family Guy on FOX hits its 200th episode milestone on November 11 at 9p. On October 24, Lifetime debuts the new docu-series The Houstons: On Our Own with back-to-back episodes starting at 9p. African American network Bounce TV kicks off its 2012-2013 college football coverage this Saturday with the Elizabeth City State versus Virginia State game live from Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, VA at 1p. Bounce TV offers college football coverage of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Bounce TV also made a sports rights renewal deal with Urban Sports Entertainment Group to televise both CIAA football and basketball games. Bounce TV will air the CIAA Championship football game and select quarter- and semi-final CIAA tournament basketball games as part of the agreement. Furthermore, Bounce TV is set to premiere its new original series Off The Chain on October 22 at 9p hosted by Rodney Perry. Bounce TV launched a little more than a year ago and is available in 80% of African American households and 65 million homes nationally.

Discussions are underway between CBS Television Distribution and Yahoo involving a new name and new look for syndicated news magazine show The Insider. Reports are saying the show will be renamed to omg! NOW. If the decision is made, the changes are expected to happen in January. The Insider is currently in its ninth season and is hosted by Kevin Frazier and Brooke Anderson who are expected to stay with the show in the new format.

A one-hour comedy titled The Taming of the Shrew, the same name as William Shakespeare’s famous play was sold to ABC. Producing the project is Julia Roberts’ Red Om Films, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas of 3 Arts and ABC Studios. The plot is about a horrible boss and the employees who try to rein her in. Marc Hyman is penning the script and Roberts and Goldsmith-Thomas are both serving as EPs on the project.

Former Sopranos star James Gandolfini may be starring in a pilot for HBO. The premium cable network gave pilot order to Criminal Justice, an adaptation of a BBC crime drama from Peter Moffat. The drama will follow a guy, who after a night of partying with a stranger, wakes up to find her stabbed to death and is charged with her murder. Gandolfini would star as Jack Stone, a downtrodden jailhouse attorney for hangs out at police stations looking for clients. Steven Zaillian will co-write the pilot and direct with Richard Price attached to co-write. HBO will executive produce the project in association with BBC Worldwide Productions. Filming on the pilot will happen this fall in New York.

Charlie Sheen’s sitcom Anger Management on FX received a 90-episode order from the network. FX says Anger Management has averaged 4.53 million total viewers and 2.5 million among A18-49. Once Anger Management met a designated average ratings bar for the airings of eight of the first ten episodes, then an automatic 90-episode order was triggered by FX. Martin Sheen will also join the cast of Anger Management in a recurring role playing Martin Goodson, Charlie’s father. Lionsgate Television produces the series that is distributed by Debmar-Mercury.

The coverage will encompass the final night of both the Republican National Convention (RNC) and the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in addition to the night of the presidential election. The three nights of coverage will be branded as TV One: One Vote Matters. This partnership marks the first time the two organizations are working together as well as TV One presenting national convention coverage. The announcement was made jointly by NBC News President Steve Capus and TV One President/CEO Wonya Lucas. TV One will air a four-hour block of coverage on the final night of the RNC on August 30 starting at 8p and for the DNC on September 6 beginning at 8p. Ben Falcone, co-star of Bridesmaids along with his wife-actress, Melissa McCarthy, was tapped to star in TV Land’s comedy pilot, I’m Not Dead Yet. The single-camera comedy is about Sandy Lazarus (Falcone), a guy who discovers he has a rare heart condition that could cause him to die at any moment which prompts him to start speaking his mind and living life to the utmost. Ben Silverman and Jon Sherman of Electus are both serving as EPs on the project while Sherman is penning the script; Jimmy Fox is a co-executive producer. Production on the pilot will commence in September.

After airing two episodes of its dating show, 3 which delivered low ratings, CBS canceled the show. The network will air drama repeats at 9p on Sundays starting next week until The Good Wife debuts its new season on September 30. 3 premiered on July 26 with a preview episode drawing 2.4 million viewers and a 0.8 rating among A18-49 before moving to its Sunday slot this past weekend which declined further to 1.8 million total viewers and a 0.5 demo rating.

FX and producer Ryan Murphy unveiled yesterday the title of the new chapter of American Horror Story as American Horror Story: Asylum. The plot is set in 1964 and stars headlining the next installment include Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Zachary Quinto, James Cromwell and Joseph Fiennes. Principal photography commenced on July 17 and it will premiere in October. Twentieth Century Fox Television is producing.

Author, playwright, essayist, screenwriter and political activist, Eugene Luther Gore Vidal died at the age of 86 Tuesday night at his home in the Hollywood Hills. Mr. Vidal was a contemporary to other literary greats such as Norman Mailer and Truman Capote and was also a major celebrity who became a fixture on talk shows and gossip columns. His works include hundreds of essays and best-selling novels such as Lincoln, Myra Breckenridge, The City and the Pillar and the Tony-nominated play, The Best Man which is currently experiencing a popular revival on Broadway. Mr. Vidal additionally wrote for television and was best known for penning the play Visit to a Small Planet for the Goodyear Television Playhouse in 1955. A year before in 1954, he wrote Dark Possession, a Studio One drama starring Geraldine Fitzgerald. CBS’ Studio One was an anthology series presenting a different drama each week.

Comedy writer from TV’s Golden Age, Sidney Reznick, died last Friday in Los Angeles, five days before his 93rd birthday. Mr. Reznick was a staff writer for The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and he was on stage when Tiny Tim (known for the song Tiptoe Through the Tulips) wed Victoria Mae Budinger (aka Miss Vicki) on the late-show in December 1969. In 1957, Mr. Reznick created the comedic game show Sez Who? and also was on the staff of I’ve Got a Secret in the 1960s and wrote episodes of the television shows Beetle Bailey, Love, American Style, The Love Boat and The Odd Couple. He also wrote jokes for the likes of Jimmy Durante and Bob Hope and early in his career worked in radio with Al Jolson, Ethel Merman and Steve Allen among others. Mr. Reznick is survived by his sons, Bruce and Robert and two grandchildren.
