In celebration of General Hospital‘s 50th anniversary, SOAPnet is airing a 50-hour marathon of classic episodes from the series, beginning Friday, March 29 at 10p and running through Monday, April 1 at 12a. Fashion Finale: TLC‘s longest running primetime series What Not to Wear, the makeover show that became brand-defining for the network, is wrapping. “After 10 incredible seasons, we felt that it was the right time to end the series,” said Amy Winter, EVP and General Manager of TLC, noting that the show’s resident fashion experts, Stacy London and Clinton Kelly “have also become two of the most sought after fashion experts and TV personalities in the industry. ABC is ready for romance with the return of The Bachelorette for a ninth season on Monday, May 29 at 9p; the series then moves to its regular time slot of 8-10p the next week. For those who crave a good burger, Travel Channel’s new original series Burger Land will have your mouth watering. ABC has a new primetime mystery reality series Whodunnit? set to roll out this summer from Anthony E. Zuiker, creator of the CSI franchise and Cris Abrego, founder of the production company 51 Minds.  Production has started on this nine-episode series where 13 contestants put their investigative skills to the test to solve a series of murders.  The amateur sleuths will reside on a luxury estate where each week they must solve a new crime in order to advance in the game.  Those who fail will be eliminated until three are left.  In the final episode, one player will reveal the killer and take home the $250,000 prize.  This interactive series is produced by Zuiker’s Dare to Pass and 51 Minds.

UK pop band, The Wanted landed a new docu-series on E! premiering this June under the working  title The Wanted Life. Bridging the gap between television and social media, HGTV launches a new series Spontaneous Construction on Friday, February 15 with back-to-back episodes at 8p and 830p.  The half-hour series is hosted by Ricky Paull Goldin who utilizes email, Facebook, Twitter, Craigslist and other social media outlets to initiate a “task mob” of carpenters, skilled laborers and neighbors who live near or travel from afar to surprise homeowners with a renovation job finished in two days.  In a twist, the “flash mob” turned task mob workers also perform choreographed dances to such hits as “Footloose” and “Bust A Move” in between painting and plastering.

Actress and filmmaker Isabella Rossellini returns to Sundance Channel in her latest series Mammas which bows appropriately on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12.  In this new nine-episode series, Rossellini writes, directs and is featured dressed in fantastical costumes in reenactments to become like animal mothers.  From cuckoos to wasps, Rossellini’s entertaining and educational portrayals will show the varied ways mothers in the wild provide for their young.  Previously, Rossellini showed the world the unconventional mating and the sex lives of animals in her short film series Green Porno and Green Porno Seduce Me.  Mammas is additionally produced by Patrice Haddad and Claire Marquet in association with Sundance Channel.

ABC also approved a crime drama series, Motive, from Daniel Cerone, executive producer of Dexter and The Mentalist.  The drama offers a different take on the crime genre by not focusing on who committed the crime but the motivation behind it.  ABC is set to premiere the 13-episode this summer.  Kristin Lehman will star as Detective Angie Flynn along with Louis Ferreira, Lauren Holly, Roger Cross, Brendan Penny and Cameron Bright.  Motive is developed by CTV and is produced by Foundation Features and Lark Productions in association with Bell Media; NBCUniversal International is handling distribution.

Daytime talk show Katie has been renewed for a second season, says Janice Marinelli, President of Disney-ABC Domestic Television.  “‘Katie’ is the No. 1 new syndicated talk show of the 2012-13 season, and we are thrilled to announce a green light for Season Two, ” said Marinelli. “She’s an immensely talented host who has an incomparable ability to connect with her viewers. We also have outstanding station partners and time periods, and look forward to continued success with ‘Katie’ this year and into Season Two.”  Since its premiere and through the week of January 14, 2013, Katie tops all first and second season syndicated talk shows in Households and Total Viewers.  Furthermore, Katie continues to be the #1 new daytime syndicated talk show among W25-54.  Disney-ABC Domestic Television has renewed Katie with its existing stations in more than 95% of the US including the ABC Owned station group.  Other station groups carrying the talker include Allbritton Communications, Belo Corporation, Cox Media Group, Gannett Broadcasting, Hearst Television, LIN Broadcasting, Media General, Meredith, Raycom, Scripps Howard Broadcasting, Sinclair and Young Broadcasting among others.

Buddy Valastro, star of TLC’s Cake Boss and Next Great Baker, will star in a new one-hour pilot ordered by the network called Bakery Go Time (wt).  The series will follow Valastro as he combines his business skills and baking expertise to help other family-run bakeries that are struggling.  TLC announced a nation-wide casting call for bakeries in need of Valastro’s help and more information can be found at http://tlc.howstuffworks.com/tv/tlc-casting.htm. High Noon Productions is producing the pilot and TLC will debut it this summer.

Drama series Dracula for NBC has cast Katie McGrath (Merlin) and Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones).  The drama is set in the 1890s and finds Dracula (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) living a double life in London as an American businessman named Alan Grayson interested in science. His plans to seek revenge on those who made him a vampire centuries ago is hindered when he falls in love with Mina (Jessica DeGouw) who appears to be a reincarnation of his dead wife.  McGrath will play Lucy Westenra, an aristocratic London social butterfly who is also Mina’s best friend.  Anozie will play R. M. Renfield, Dracula’s loyal confidante who is the keeper of his secrets.

Reportedly Current TV, founded by Vice President Al Gore and his business partner Joel Hyatt, is being acquired by Al Jazeera, according to NYT.  If the deal goes through, Current TV will provide the pan-Arab news outlet a pathway into American homes as Current TV is available in nearly 60 million of the 100 million homes in the US through cable or satellite service.  Apparently Al Jazeera will create a new channel based in New York instead of using Current to distribute its English-language channel, Al Jazeera English which is based in Doha, Qatar.  The new channel may be called Al Jazeera America with 60 percent of the programming produced in the US with the other 40 percent coming from Al Jazeera English.

HLN tagged Ty Pennington (star of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) as host of its new monthly original half-hour news series American Journey which debuts January 12 at 8p with an encore on January 13 at 8p.  Sponsored by Chevrolet, the 10-episode series covers stories of individuals and communities who have found inventive and surprising ways to address today’s challenges by applying lessons learned from American pioneers.  Each monthly installment will air four times a month during weekend prime.

The 90-minute season three premiere of Dance Moms on Lifetime airing January 1 at 9p delivered a series best tally of 2.8 million total viewers as well as an average of 1.4 million with A18-49 and 1.3 million among A25-54.  Following Dance Moms’ premiere, Lifetime aired a sneak peak of Double Divas which averaged 1.5 million total viewers.  Double Divas will make its official debut on Lifetime January 10 at 10p with two back-to-back half-hour episodes following Project Runway All Stars.

Also on New Year’s, truTV launched Hardcore Pawn: Chicago which delivered 2.1 million total viewers marking the network’s largest series premiere ever.  The series premiere also brought in 1.0 million among A18-49 and 602,000 with M18-49.  Hardcore Pawn: Chicago also surpassed the network’s previous record set by the original Hardcore Pawn in August 2010.  Hardcore Pawn: Chicago is produced by Bischoff-Hervey Entertainment.

ABC Family reports its 15th annual 25 Days of Christmas programming stunt broke records among total viewers at 2.8 million total; 1.3 million among A18-49; and 701,000 with A18-34.  Furthermore, 25 Days of Christmas reached more than 100 million unique total viewers for the 6th consecutive year, pacing at +6% higher than in 2011 (106.9 million vs. 101.3 million).

Over the holidays BET celebrated the 35th anniversary of Roots by broadcasting the miniseries in full.  Nearly 11 million viewers watched the three-day Roots premiere weekend on BET from December 21 through December 23.  On Saturday, December 22 the premiere of Roots Part Three at 8p is now the #1 Roots telecast in cable TV history with an average of 1.8 million viewers among 1.4 million households, delivering a 1.5 coverage rating.
