With the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards in the rearview mirror, the TV industry is already looking forward to next year. Variety reported that the Television Academy is in advanced talks to bring the Emmy Awards telecast to Amazon Prime Video, which would mark the first time the ceremony would be off broadcast TV since 1949.
-The Emmy Awards previously alternated broadcasts among the four major U.S. networks: ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. The most recent eight-year “wheel deal” contract expired this year, leading many analysts and experts in the industry to speculate if it would renew a similar rotating contract, opt for a simulcast scenario, or go fully on streaming like the Oscars moving to YouTube and SAG-AFTRA’s Actor Awards shifting to Netflix.
-As part of the most recent contract, networks were reportedly paying around $8 million per year to the Academy, which is similar to the license fee under a previous deal. However, it’s unclear what a deal with Prime Video might look like or whether deal points are strictly in place.
