Points to CBS for having Stephen Colbert, whose show was canceled by the network two months ago, as the first Emmy presenter last night. The late-night host got a standing ovation before asking, “While I have your attention – is anyone hiring? Because I have 200 very qualified candidates who will be available in June.”

Host Nate Bargatze then took to the stage with a novel way to keep acceptance speeches brief: he said was donating $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of America. For every winner whose speech went over 45 seconds, he would subtract $1,000 from that donation per second; winners whose speeches went under 45 seconds would add $1,000 per second to his donation. A running tally let some speech-givers know how they were faring. (“I’ll pay the difference!” said supporting actress winner Hannah Einbinder as she ran down the numbers.) For a list of the evening’s winners, go here.

MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd, fired after his on-air remarks about the horrific assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, responded on Substack. “Right Wing media mob ginned up, went after me on a plethora of platforms, and MSNBC reacted to that mob,” wrote Dowd. “Even though most at MSNBC knew my words were being misconstrued, the timing of my words forgotten (remember I said this before anyone knew Kirk was a target), and that I apologized for any miscommunication on my part, I was terminated by the end of the day.” MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler and Dowd each apologized for the remarks, which Kutler called “inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable.”

“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” director Jim Hoskinson was a guest on Colbert’s show to say goodbye. “We’ve had many memories,” said Hoskinson. “We mostly had great moments and occasionally we do live shows that [can be hairy] but we have a job where we come in and laugh so it makes the day pretty good.” Hoskinson – who just picked up the show’s first Emmy – told Colbert he’s taking his RV and “heading out.” Associate director Yvonne De Mare has been promoted to the director slot for the show’s final season.
