Netflix’s long-rumored spinoff of “Squid Game” must have moved during a game of Red Light, Green Light. Because the project is now dead.
–Rumors first circulated in 2024 that Netflix was developing an English-language spinoff of the Korean hit drama series, and had even tapped director David Fincher for the project.
-The third season of Hwang Dong-hyuk’s series also ended with a teaser that alluded to a possible American version, featuring Cate Blanchett as a recruiter in Los Angeles. 
-However, sources close to Fincher told The Playlist that the project is no longer moving forward, as Netflix’s priorities for the franchise have shifted.

Netflix is, however, developing a new untitled scripted series about the New York Yankees with Daytime Emmy Award winner Josh Wakely and Jason Bateman’s production company, Aggregate Films. The new project ties nicely into Netflix’s ongoing relationship with the MLB, which kicked off with a stream of the MLB Opening Night Game on March 25 this year.

Peacock’s “Love Island USA” earned the No. 1 placement on Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 chart by a landslide with 1.997 billion viewing minutes during the week of July 6, due in part to the Season 8 finale. In second place is “House of the Dragon” on HBO Max with 969 million viewing minutes during the same week, according to Nielsen’s streaming content ratings.

The lion does not concern itself with TV premieres, but this one’s happening anyway. National Geographic will release the first episode of its four-part nature documentary, “Lion,” on Aug. 19. The series is executive produced by “The Lion King” (2019) director Jon Favreau, as well as BBC Natural History Unit director Mike Gunton.

“The Bonfire of the Vanities,” a series adaptation of the 1987 novel by Tom Wolfe slated for production at Apple TV, is up for sale once again. Apple TV spent several months developing the series before deciding not to proceed due to involved parties’ disagreements over the creative vision. Together, Emmy Award-winning TV writer David E. Kelley and production studio Warner Bros. Television are looking for another buyer to continue the series. Matt Reeves (“Batman”) remains the series director.

A+E Global announced two new projects to commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11. “102 Minutes Inside the Towers,” a documentary special for the History Channel, will premiere on Sept. 11; the other, “Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story,” will air on Lifetime on Sept. 12. Both will be produced by “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts.

Peter Parker might be the Spider-Man who’s cleaning up at the box office, but Miles Morales gets more play on streaming. According to Nielsen, the two animated “Spider-Verse” movies have been viewed on TV and streaming for more minutes in the US than any other iteration of the film franchise. However, all 10 “Spider-Man” movies combined can’t hold a candle to the “Spidey and His Amazing Friends” children’s cartoon series, which has been watched for almost double the amount of minutes (74 billion vs. 38 billion).
