Lots of news from NBC as the network canceled its new series The Playboy Club, making it the first cancelation of the fall season. Starting next Monday, NBC will replace The Playboy Club with encore episodes of Prime Suspect in the 10p slot and then later on October 31, the network is ready to debut its new primetime newsmagazine, Rock Center With Brian Williams in the time period. The Playboy Club premiered with a 1.6 rating among A18-49 and nearly 5.0 million total viewers and for its third episode this past Monday night, dipped to a 1.2 A18-49 rating and 3.4 million viewers.

NBC further gave full-season pickups to its new comedies Up All Night and Whitney. Up All Night starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett has averaged a 2.3 rating with A18-49 during its first three weeks and Whitney, headlined by Whitney Cummings has averaged a 2.9 A18 49 for its first two weeks. So far, NBC has not indicated if its third new sitcom, Free Agents will receive a full-season order or not.

The producers of FOX’s The Simpsons, currently in its 23rd season, and the show’s voice actors are involved in a negotiations impasse concerning future episodes of the animated comedy beyond this present season. 20th Century Fox Television, the production company behind The Simpsons has asked the voice actors to take a 45% pay cut to renew their contracts for more seasons. FOX has not released a statement regarding the situation, though 20th Century Fox TV did make this statement: “23 seasons in, The Simpsons is as creatively vibrant as ever and beloved by millions around the world. We believe this brilliant series can and should continue, but we cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model. We are hopeful that we can reach an agreement with the voice cast that allows The Simpsons to go on entertaining audiences with original episodes for many years to come.”

It’s clean up time on The Style Network as the channel is dubbing Mondays as Makeover Monday by airing back-to-back makeover series Clean House New York and the return of How Do I Look? beginning October 17. Kelsey Grammer’s upcoming scripted drama series Boss has not yet premiered though the network, Starz Entertainment has granted a 10-episode second season with production commencing early next year. The inaugural episode is also directed by Gus Van Sant who makes his television directorial debut. Boss is produced by Lionsgate Television and created by Farhad Safinia.

Younger male-skewing network, G4 is partnering with the US Navy on a new docu-series, Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan launching October 25 at 10p. The 10-episode series will allow viewers to be embedded with Navy soldiers in Afghanistan working as part of the US Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, the world’s elite combat force for countering Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), WMD and other weapons. The series will use more than 15 cameras mounted on helmets and on the bodies of the soldiers to capture the eight-man team’s five-month tour. Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan is produced by Big Fish Entertainment.

FOX is keeping Jennifer Lopez close at hand by granting a script commitment with penalty for a family dramedy project from her and showrunner Silvio Horta. Crime-fighting show America’s Most Wanted is being reinstated on Lifetime for its 25th season later this year. Kendra, husband Hank and baby Little Hank settle into their new Los Angeles home while Kendra begins writing her second book and the couple considers another baby. Jimmy Kimmel’s real-life uncle, Frank Potenza known as “Uncle Frank” on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! died yesterday at the age of 77. Mr. Potenza was a former New York policeman, a Korean War veteran and security guard in Las Vegas. He joined his nephew’s show in 2003 as a security guard and on-air contributor and even re-located to Los Angeles to appear regularly on the show.

NBC picked up a one-hour wrestling drama from Jerry Bruckheimer and former pro wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock. Johnson is on board as an executive producer. NBC gave the period project about the world of wrestling in the 1980s a put pilot commitment. Jerry Bruckheimer Television in association with Warner Bros. Television is producing. Brent Fletcher and Seamus Kevin Fahey are co-executive producers and writers and KristieAnne Reed is also a co-executive producer. A single-camera comedy script from Sony Pictures Television and Adam Sandler’s company Happy Madison was nabbed by ABC, reports Variety. The comedy plot is set in 2016 about a guy who thinks his life is perfect until he’s struck by lightning which takes him back to the year 2011. Daniel Sweren-Becker is penning the script and he will be executive producer along with Doug Robinson and Steve Carr.

Rev. Al Sharpton lands an official role as host of a nightly talk forum on MSNBC. Isaiah Mustafa was cast in a recurring role on ABC’s upcoming remake of Charlie’s Angels. Mustafa will play Det. NBC seems to be getting into the horror genre by approving a script order for Frankenstein. The project is a contemporary take on the legend of Frankenstein which originated in the 1818 novel by Mary Shelley. Executive producers Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner of FOX’s House are writing Frankenstein for Universal Media Studios and BermanBraun. Universal Studios holds the intellectual property rights to Frankenstein in addition to other classic horror characters as Dracula, the Wolfman and the Mummy.

Season three of NBC’s a cappella competition show The Sing-Off will sport a new judge as Sara Bareilles joins Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman for the new season opening September 19 at 8p. Bareilles replaces Nicole Scherzinger and she appeared on the show’s finale last season. NBC has opted to make The Sing-Off a weekly competition show versus running a slew of eps in one week. In doing so, the show has doubled its number of episodes to 11 (up from five last season) and also a total of sixteen groups will now compete which is six more than last season.
