HBO handed good news to frosh comedy Enlightened starring Laura Dern, renewing the series for a second season. Three other HBO comedies were cancelled including Hung, How to Make It in America and Bored to Death. The three comedies were axed apparently to make room on Sunday nights for new programming HBO will launch in 2012. Hung has averaged 3.9 million viewers while How to Make It in America and Bored to Death each averaged 2.3 million viewers taking multiple linear telecasts, DVR and On Demand into consideration. The newly renewed Enlightened has the smallest average audience of 1.5 million viewers though has received much critical acclaim.

Marking the first time in 46 years, the Super Bowl will officially be available through live streaming. The NFL will live stream the Super Bowl’s NBC telecast in addition to this current season’s Pro Bowl and NBC’s broadcasts of Wild Card playoff games through the NFL’s and NBC’s websites via Verizon’s NFL Mobile app. NBC will televise Super Bowl XLVI on February 5.

Upcoming new series Q’VIVA! THE CHOSEN documenting the transcontinental journey to find the best Latin American artists will make its Spanish-language US premiere January 28 at 7p on Univision. The series from Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Jamie King in partnership with BlackBerry will also air on top networks throughout the Americas. Univision will air the one-hour Q’VIVA! THE CHOSEN over 12 weeks each Saturday at 7p. Other networks airing the series include Televisa in Mexico and Caracol in Colombia. The series will debut internationally throughout Central and South America and additional networks as well as a major English-language US broadcaster will be announced soon.

A new version of Bloopers from dick clark productions (dcp) will debut in syndication fall 2012. The show has already been picked up by Tribune stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Washington DC, Houston, Seattle, Miami, Sacramento, Portland, Indianapolis, San Diego, Hartford, Harrisburg, Grand Rapids and New Orleans. Trifecta Entertainment & Media is distributing the series and will also head ad sales. Bloopers will have 120 original half-hour episodes over the next three years and is intended to run as two back-to-back episodes in a one-hour block on weekends.

ABC News announced Christiane Amanpour anchor of This Week will take on a new role within the ABC News division as the Global Affairs anchor across all platforms effective immediately. Amanpour will focus on foreign affairs reporting for ABC in primetime specials and for the network’s news broadcasts. Beginning January 8, George Stephanopoulos will take on the dual role as anchor of This Week in addition to his current role as anchor on Good Morning America. In addition to remaining at ABC News, Amanpour will host a weekday show on CNN International. Jim Walton, President of CNN Worldwide issued this statement regarding Amanpour’s new role: “Christiane Amanpour has been synonymous with international reporting and with CNN for many years. Yesterday, the FCC passed rules that would lower the volume on television commercials. The new rules are part of the legislation passed in 2010 and signed by President Obama called the CALM Act (Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation). The rules will go into effect on December 13, 2012 and will charge television stations, cable operators and others to keep the volume on both local and national ads to the same level as the program surrounding it.

On New Year’s Day, FUEL TV, the entertainment and sports network from FOX Sports Media Group, launches the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) with a 24-hour marathon featuring five show premieres beginning at 12a. For the coming New Year, FUEL TV will serve up more than 2,000 hours of UFC programming with 100+ hours of live fights, weigh-ins, preliminary matches and pre- and post-fight shows. Season four of RuPaul’s Drag Race launches on Logo with a 90-minute premiere episode January 30 at 9p. The new syndicated first-run talk show Jeff Probst has been sold to date in more than 70% of the US for its fall 2012 launch, reports CBS Television Distribution. Starring Jeff Probst, the long-time host of CBS’ Survivor, the one-hour talk show will now air in 22 of the top 25 markets. New sales include those from station groups CBS, Dispatch Broadcast Group, Gray Television, Raycom Media, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Hearst Television among others.

Eleven classic TV sitcoms from Carsey Werner were added to the online video joint venture Hulu and its Hulu Plus subscription service. Syfy approved a pilot script for a one-hour drama based on the DC Comics franchise, Booster Gold, reports THR. The project is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television. Greg Berlanti will serve as executive producer while Andrew Kreisberg will write the script and also be an executive producer. The plot is about Booster Gold, a has-been athlete from the future who travels back to the present time in hopes of becoming the best super hero ever. CBS News made it official yesterday by announcing plans to revamp its mornings with a new morning show premiering January 9. Chris Licht was tapped as Executive Producer and will continue as VP/Programming in charge of CBS News broadcasts and developing new opportunities across all platforms. Furthermore, John Miller will join the morning program as Senior Correspondent while Rebecca Jarvis will become the Business and Economics Correspondent and Jeff Glor, presently The Early Show news anchor will serve as Special Correspondent. The program will debut in a newly-built studio at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City.

After giving freshman drama series Prime Suspect a chance to gain viewers through double airings each week, NBC said it is closing down production on further episodes beyond the 13-episode order. Prime Suspect, starring Maria Bello is not officially canceled though the series did not have a spot on the network’s midseason schedule and in its current Thursday 10p slot, NBC will replace it with The Firm which begins its regular run on January 12. Couponing goes to a new level in a new competition series on TLC titled Extreme Couponing All-Stars bowing December 27 at 10p. The seven-episode series will pit dedicated couponers in competition against each other to see which one can save the most on $500 worth of merchandise that is donated afterwards. The half-hour series will air on Tuesdays at 10p and ends with a one-hour finale episode that will watch as three top shoppers battle it out in one store. TLC ordered 12 episodes with six airing in December and the other six slated to air in 2012. The initial six episodes were shot in various counties in Oklahoma and the action begins as the police pull over dangerous drivers and follows them through the sobriety tests, the interrogation, searches, lockup and the bail posting process. Sophomore series The Glades was granted a third season renewal by A&E Network for summer 2012. A&E gave The Glades, starring Matt Passmore ten new episodes from Fox Television Studios. Courtney Cox and David Arquette have sold a comedy with penalty titled Ten Years to NBC. The project is from ABC Studios and is a singl -camera comedy written by Howard Morris about the 10-year relationship of a recently separated couple in the center of a group of friends and family. Cox, Arquette and Morris will all serve as executive producers. NBC also picked up a drama project called The Next Insanely Great Thing from writer Daniel Taplitz. Based on a true story, the drama is about suburbanites who agree to become test subjects for a high-tech company’s social media experiments. Ian Sanders and Kim Moses are the executive producers along with Taplitz. ABC Studios is also producing this project.

FX’s Justified tapped Neal McDonough (Desperate Housewives, Boomtown) and Mykelti Williamson (Boomtown, Forrest Gump) as bad guys for the third season. McDonough will play recurring character Quarles, a sharp-dressed Detroit mobster who comes to Kentucky with visions of becoming a crime lord. Williamson will play Limehouse, a man who lives in a small black town in Harlan County who will do whatever it takes, legal or not, to protect his holler. Justified’s third season returns in January and viewers will meet both characters early in the season. Production on the 13 new episodes began this past Monday.
