New syndicated show Katie from Disney-ABC Domestic Television launched Monday with the highest new daytime talk show premiere in syndication during the last ten years. Katie delivered a 2.8 HH rating and 8 share in the 56 US Metered Markets. Katie’s results equaled the highest daytime talk show opener in the last decade going back to the launch of Dr. Phil in September 2002. New talk show Steve Harvey from NBCUniversal Television Distribution debuted last Tuesday with a 1.5 HH rating and delivered that same rating again this Monday. Other new shows that debuted Monday include The Jeff Probst Show from CBS Television Distribution (CTD) with a 1.0 HH rating and The Ricki Lake Show from Twentieth Television posted a 0.8 HH. It should be noted The Ricki Lake Show was the only new talk show affected by the Cablevision-Tribune retransmission dispute which continues in the New York City DMA. Cablevision covers 40% of the NYC DMA which means that 40% of the NY TV households were not able to watch the premiere of The Ricki Lake Show. Ratings results from other returning syndicated shows had Warner Bros. Brand Networks’ Ellen delivering a 3.0 in total households on Monday in metered markets, the show’s highest rating since the 2006-07 season. The Dr. Oz Show from Sony Pictures Television posted a 2.8 primary telecast average for its fourth season premiere on Monday as well as a 3.3 HH weighted cume. Anderson Live from Warner Bros. Brand Networks scored a 1.3 HH rating on Monday; Maury and The Jerry Springer Show from NBCU Television Distribution posted a 1.5 and a 1.2 HH rating respectively; The Wendy Williams Show from Twentieth Television posted a 1.0 HH rating; and it should be noted the Dr. Phil Show from CTD was pre-empted on Monday in many markets on CBS affiliates due to the US Open coverage though the season premiere of Dr. Phil was yesterday. Then during its premiere week of September 3, LIVE! with Kelly and Michael from Disney-ABC Domestic Television scored double digit gains in homes across the US Metered Markets over last year’s premiere week (+14% – 3.3/11 vs. 2.9/10 for w/o 9/5/11) In addition, LIVE! had year-over-year time slot gains across women demos: +50% with W18-34 and +27% with both W18-49 and W25-54.

Ron Palillo, best known for playing Horshak, one of the Sweathogs on the 1970s sitcom, Welcome Back, Kotter died Monday night in Palm Beach, FL. He was 63. Starting in 1975, Mr. Palillo was one of the oddball students who plagued Mr. Kotter (Gabe Kaplan) for four seasons on the ABC comedy. Mr. Palillo’s character was the nasally-voiced Arnold Dingfelder Horshack who was always the first to raise his hand in class with his “Ooo-ooo-oooooh!” After Welcome Back, Kotter, Mr. Palillo guest-starred on a variety of shows including The A-Team, CHiPs and Murder, She Wrote and in 1996, played himself on several episodes of Ellen. Also in 2002, Mr. Palillo agreed to appear and box Dustin Diamond for an episode of Celebrity Boxing billed as Horshack vs. Screech. During recent years, he also showed up in various TV Land nostalgia specials. Perhaps his most rewarding role though was teaching drama at the G-STAR School of the Arts for Motion Pictures and Broadcasting, a charter high school in West Palm Beach.

Yesterday, NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt responded to Sharon Osbourne and her claims that her son, Jack Osbourne was let go from NBC’s upcoming new reality series, Stars Earn Stripes after he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Reportedly, Sharon Osbourne was angry at NBC’s supposed decision which prompted her to leave her position as judge on America’s Got Talent.
“First, we have the deepest affection for Sharon Osbourne and consider her to be part of the NBC family,” Greenblatt said in a statement. “And our hearts go out to her, Ozzy, Jack and his family at this time. We hold medical information in strict confidence and therefore cannot comment specifically about Jack, but as a company that cares deeply about the health and safety of everyone on our shows – especially one like Stars Earn Stripes that requires dangerous water stunts, strenuous physical activity, and uses live ammunition – we required all potential participants to undergo medical vetting to ensure that they could safely participate. Although we did not ask Jack to participate in the competition, we were able to offer him two substantial alternative roles on the show, both of which he declined. This network does not discriminate on any basis.”
