TV One has a new original scripted series on the docket titled Belle’s, a comedy about widower William “Big Bill” Cooper who owns and operates his family’s upscale soul food restaurant.  The series debuts January 21 at 10p with the first of six episodes.  The half-hour series was co-created by producer Ed Weinberger and stars Keith David, Elise Neal, Tami Roman, Ella Joyce and Miguel Nunez as well as newcomer Nadja Alaya.  Nunez also serves as co-creator and EP along with Weinberger.  Oscar Turner also is an EP for Gallery Road Productions and Jubba Seyyid for TV One.

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes will be working with NBC in a new deal to write and produce a period drama for the network titled The Gilded Age.  Produced by Universal Television, the drama will depict the world of millionaire titans in New York during the 1880s.  Fellowes will continue in his present roles as creator, writer and executive producer of Downton Abbey which was recently renewed for a fourth season by UK’s ITV.

Fuse, the national music TV network and part of The Madison Square Garden Company, acquired the series Ex-Wives of Rock from Tricon Film & Television.  The series will be included in Fuse Friday Nights, an all-new night of original series.  The US premiere of Ex-Wives of Rock is December 7 at 1030p sandwiched between the series return of Funny or Die’s Billy on the Street at 10p and Warped Roadies at 11p.  Set in Los Angeles, Ex-Wives of Rock tells the true-life stories of women who have married and divorced rock stars.  Narrated by Shannon Tweed, wife of KISS bassist Gene Simmons, the series looks at the lives of Athena Lee (ex-wife of Scorpions drummer James Kottak and sister to Tommy Lee), Sharise Neil (ex-wife of Motley Crue frontman Vince Neil, Bobbie Brown (ex-wife of Warrant frontman Jani Lane and once engaged to Tommy Lee) and Susan Dixon, also known as “Blue” (ex-wife of Warrant bassist Jerry Dixon).  Ex-Wives of Rock also airs in Canada on Slice.

A slew of celebrities are heading to Portlandia when the series makes its third season debut on IFC January 4 at 10p.  Those appearing include Roseanne Barr, Matt Berry, Rose Byrne, Bill Hader, Juliette Lewis, Martina Navratilova and George Wendt among many others.  As previously announced, Chloe Sevigny will appear in multiple episodes during the new season playing Fred and Carrie’s new roommate, Alexandra.  Other series regulars such as Jeff Goldblum, Kyle MacLachlan and Kumail Nanjiani will also be returning for season three.  For those fans who cannot wait until January, IFC will air an all-new pre-premiere episode on December 14 at 1030p which will also be available on IFC.com, the Portlandia Facebook page and iTunes the next day.

Comedy Central renewed its sketch comedy series Key & Peele for a third season and has also increased its episode order to 13 eps for next fall.  Key & Peele is executive produced by its creators Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele in addition to Ian Roberts, Jay Martel and Joel Zadak.  During its second season, Key & Peele averaged 1.5 million viewers and its finale airs tonight at 1030p.

A pair of late night shows were renewed by FX as BrandX and Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell each received 13-episode orders.  BrandX starring Russell Brand will expand in the next season from a half-hour show to a full hour.  FX will also air a one-hour special of BrandX this Thursday featuring Sarah Silverman and author and new age philosopher Daniel Pinchbeck.  Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell will air its final episode of the year on Thursday featuring The Daily Show’s John Oliver as Bell’s guest.  A new season of Totally Biased will return on FX January 17.  Both series are produced in-house by FX Productions.  BrandX is also produced in association with Branded Films and Dakota Films.

This Sunday fans of the late Larry Hagman will get a chance to pay their respects to him and his character, J.R. Ewing at Southfork Ranch located outside of Dallas in Parker, TX.  The 340-acre homestead, whose exteriors were made famous by the TV series will offer complimentary tours from 2-4p this Sunday followed by a memorial reception where guests can leave cards, flowers and sign a memorial book to Hagman.  Forever Resorts, the company that presently owns the ranch, revealed that Hagman, who died on November 22, had a family outing planned at Southfork the day of his passing.

Former Days of Our Lives cast member Matt Cedeno was cast in a recurring role on the upcoming Lifetime series Devious Maids.  The new drama from Marc Cherry follows four Beverly Hills-based housekeepers (Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez and Judy Reyes) who have big dreams of their own.  Cedeno joins as a recording artist returning home after a long tour.  Melinda Page Hamilton is also joining Devious Maids playing a conniving housekeeper.  If the series gets a second season order, both Cedeno and Hamilton will be bumped to series regulars.

The November sweep is coming to a close and expectations point to NBC coming out ahead of CBS, FOX and ABC.  This marks the first time NBC has earned a first place since 2002.  NBC can credit its ratings strength with the fall edition of The Voice, Sunday Night Football and with solid performances from new series Revolution and Go On.  To date, NBC is currently averaging a 2.8 A18-49 rating which is +17% higher than CBS in second place which is averaging a 2.4 in the demo; FOX is in third place with a 2.3 and ABC in fourth with a 2.2 average.  CBS is winning November sweep with total viewers at an average of 10.3 million with ABC next at 7.93 million, NBC a close third at 7.92 million and FOX at 6.5 million.  In addition, Univision Network reported it will finish the November sweep period with an audience gain in broadcast primetime of +4% with total viewers and +1% among A18-49 versus the November 2011 sweep.  Univision’s sister network, TeleFutura has jumped by +58% among total viewers and +51% among A18-49.

After two seasons on air, Starz has decided to cancel its drama series Boss starring Kelsey Grammer and produced by Lionsgate TV.  The network had originally committed to two seasons of the drama about a corrupt Chicago mayor.  The network said in response to their decision: “After much deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to not proceed with ‘Boss.’ We remain proud of this award-winning show, its exceptional cast and writers, and are grateful to Kelsey Grammer, Farhad Safinia and our partners at Lionsgate TV.”

Even though the fourth season of Downton Abbey has not yet been commissioned, creator Julian Fellowes said yesterday he is confident that a fourth season will happen, cites THR.  Downton Abbey airs on commercial network ITV1 in the UK and season three is set to premiere here in the US via PBS January 6.  Season three recently concluded in the UK and ITV1 said it was the series’ best season-to-date with audience performance.  Fellowes further said with the various forms of digital and delayed viewing tallied, Downton Abbey attracted just shy of 15 million viewers in the UK for its third season.

FOX is developing a marijuana-themed comedy titled The Happy Tree from Entourage trio Mark Wahlberg, Steve Levinson and Rob Weiss.  The half-hour project will center on a young, brash corporate attorney who quits his day job following a nervous breakdown and seeks a life of peace and serenity on Venice Beach only to become the unlikely voice for the movement to legalize marijuana.  Weiss will pen the project along with co-producers Jay Leggett and Blake Leibel.  Lawrence Longo is also involved as a co-exec producer.  20th Century Fox Television will produce.

Jersey Shore’s Vinny Guadagnino is sticking around MTV as the network approved a new hybrid talk show/reality series, The Show With Vinny produced by SallyAnn Salsano of 495 Productions.  The series will move the typical talk show format out of the studio and into Vinny Guadagnino’s family home in Staten Island, NY.  There, Vinny will conduct off-the-cuff and unscripted interviews with stars who are invited to dine at his house.  The series will also feature real people from Vinny’s personal life such as his mother Paula and his Uncle Nino and more.

Mila Kunis is set to executive produce a period drama for The CW titled Meridian Hills.  The drama is set in 1972 and explores the women’s liberation movement.  Sydney Sidner will write the drama and will also be an EP along with Chris Keyser, Kunis and the Tannenbaum Co.’s Eric and Kim Tannenbaum.  Lisa Sterbakov (Robot Chicken) will also be an EP in addition to Kunis’ Black Swan managers Cami Curtis and Susan Curtis.  Meridian Hills is set in a Midwest country club during a time with the Equal Rights Amendment was just beginning.  The plot centers on a young, newly married woman who joins the Junior League and discovers an eclectic group of other young women who become allies in her quest to change the system.

Production has commenced in Los Angeles this week on ABC Family’s drama series pilot The Fosters starring Teri Polo, Sherri Saum, Jake T. Austin, Hayden Byerly, David Lambert, Danny Nucci and Cierra Ramirez and newcomer Maia Mitchell.  The Fosters is a one-hour drama about a multi-ethnic family consisting of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms.  The series is produced by Nuyorican Productions, Inc. and Prodco, Inc.

Also on ABC Family, three more have been cast for its multi-camera comedy, Phys EdSamm Levine (Freaks and Geeks), Sunkrish Bala (Shameless) and Chelsea Harris (guest star on Grey’s Anatomy) have joined the pilot from David H. Steinberg.  Phys Ed was picked up to pilot in September and is about Ed (Ryan Sypek) a high school jock who returns to teach at his former alma mater only to find that even though he has changed, nothing at the school has changed.  Levine will play Matt Nealy, a nerdy chemistry teacher; Bala will play Alan Rapaport, an English teacher who likes being the alpha male at the school; and Harris will play Wendy Kleinman, the attractive history teacher and cheerleading coach.  The series is being produced by Prodco.

First season comedy The Neighbors and second season drama Scandal received back-nine orders from ABC, giving both series full orders for the 2012-13 season.  The Neighbors improved its ratings for its most recent airing at a 2.0 A18-49 rating and 7 million viewers.  Scandal had similar results posting a 2.0 demo rating and 6.1 million total viewers.  These two pickups are ABC’s first full season orders for the fall season.

The Walt Disney Company is acquiring Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction.  Lucasfilm is wholly owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas.  Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney stock as of last Friday, the transaction value is $4.05 billion, with Disney paying around half in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing.  The final consideration will be subject to normal post-closing balance sheet adjustments.   The deal gives Disney ownership of Lucasfilm and its Star Wars franchise and its current businesses encompassing live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects and audio post production.  Disney will also own the various entertainment technologies under Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco including LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound.  At this time, the current Lucasfilm employees will remain in their present locations.  Kathleen Kennedy, Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn.  Kennedy will also be the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s worldwide lines of businesses to build, integrate and maximize the value of this global franchise.  Furthermore, Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films with George Lucas serving as creative consultant.  Star Wars Episode 7 will be released in 2015 with more feature films planned in the future.  The Boards of Directors of both Disney and Lucasfilm have approved this transaction which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-US merger control regulations and other normal closing conditions.  The agreement has also been approved by the sole shareholder of Lucasfilm.

NBC detailed its midseason schedule including the premiere date for Community set for February 7 at 8p.  Originally, the network was to debut Community’s new season on October 19.  Community will take over the time slot currently occupied by the final season of 30 Rock which will have concluded its 13-episode season.  Also in midseason, Parks and Recreation will move up an hour to 830p as of January 17 with comedy Up All Night going on an extended hiatus from December to April/May (as announced yesterday).  New NBC series premiere dates include: Deception on January 7 at 10p; 1600 Penn January 10 at 930p; and Ready for Love bowing on March 31 with a two-hour premiere at 8p.  Returning series consist of the fourth season of The Voice on March 25-26; Revolution wraps its fall run in November and is back March 25 at 10p; The Biggest Loser featuring the return of Jillian Michaels, is back starting January 6-7 airing on Mondays from 8-10p until the return of The Voice; Betty White’s Off Their Rockers returns January 8 with back-to-back episodes at 8p and 830p; Smash debuts its second season on February 5 with a two-hour episode at 9p and will settle into its regular day and time starting February 12 at 10p; and The Celebrity Apprentice is back beginning March 3 from 9-11p for four weeks before airing one-hour episodes on March 31 at 10p.

NBC is not moving forward with a spinoff show from The OfficeRainn Wilson was due to star in The Farm which will air as a back-door pilot of The Office this season.  The project centers on Dwight (Wilson) as a beet farmer running a bed and breakfast inn.  Back-door pilots air as a test-run to help the network determine if the project is worthy to move forward.  NBC in this instance has made the decision even before the episode aired.  NBC has not officially announced this news though reports say the episode will air in The Office as planned.

FOX’s midseason thriller The Following booked Mike Colter (Ringer) in the recurring role of FBI bureaucrat Nick Donovan, reports TVLine.  The series from Kevin Williamson is about a deranged serial killer by the name of Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) who creates his own cult of murderers using technology and the retired FBI profilers Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) who is hunting him down.  Colter’s character is brought in to head the Carroll case and supervise Agent Hardy.

Monday night’s third and final presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney tallied the least amount of viewers when compared to the other two primetime debates in this election cycle. According to Nielsen, 59.2 million viewers watched Monday which is a 10% decline from the second debate’s results on October 16 and 12% less than the first debate on October 3. The third debate did air against two live sporting events, Monday Night Football on ESPN which had 10.7 million tuning in as well as the MLB playoffs on FOX which attracted 8.1 million. For the debate, NBC drew the most viewers at 12.4 million followed by ABC at 11.7 million; FOX News with 11.5 million; CBS at 8.4 million; CNN with 5.8 million; and MBSNB with 4.1 million.

Jane Fonda will star in a new ABC comedy scheduled to premiere in 2013. The project is tentatively titled Now What? from Pushing Daisies writer Abby Gewanter. The plot is about a young woman who tears into her mother using a public blog post listing the reasons she hates her. The mother (Fonda) ends up moving in with her daughter in order to settle their differences.

Showtime’s comedy series House of Lies added Larenz Tate (Rescue Me) and Nia Long (Third Watch) in recurring roles for season two.
