CBS has cancelled reality series The Job after a second week of poor ratings.  According to Nielsen, The Job delivered a 0.7 rating with A18-49, ranking 5th among the broadcast networks in the 8p hour as well as 3.4 million viewers overall on Friday night.  This is down from its premiere results the week before of a 0.9 rating and 4.0 million total viewers.  CBS has not announced when the remaining six episodes of The Job will air.  Embassy Row and Sony Pictures Television are behind The Job with Jay Bienstock, Mark Burnett and Michael Davies as executive producers.

Coming this Friday, PBS debuts the 27th season of American Masters with “Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Godmother of Rock & Roll” at 9p (check local listings).  This premiere ties in with Black History Month and the 40th anniversary of Tharpe’s death.  Following the broadcast, the film will stream online at pbs.org/americanmasters.  American Masters is a production of THIRTEEN; WNET is the parent company of THIRTEEN and WLIW21, New York’s public television stations and operator of NJTV.

PBS and WGBH released this past Sunday’s finale ratings for the third season of Downton Abbey on MASTERPIECE  CLASSIC.  The concluding episode drew an average audience of 8.2 million total viewers, based on Nielsen Fast National data.  These results were 50% higher than the season two finale with 5.4 million total viewers in February 2012.  Furthermore, SocialGuide reported there were close to 80,000 “Downton Abbey”-related tweets sent out on Sunday, making it the second most-tweeted-about series (broadcast or cable) on television that night.

Former senior adviser to President Obama and senior strategist to his campaign, David Axelrod was hired by NBC News and MSNBC as Senior Political Analyst.  Axelrod will appear on both networks and joins soon after Robert Gibbs, former White House press secretary and adviser to the President’s campaign, was added last week as a Commentator.

Core Fusion: The name for the upcoming ABC and Univision joint news and lifestyle network for US Hispanics has been announced: Fusion, set to launch the second half of this year.  Ben Sherwood, president of ABC News said, “Our goal is for this audience to come to Fusion to be informed, entertained and empowered.”  At launch, five large cable distributors have already signed on to carry the network including Cablevision, Charter, Cox, AT&T U-verse and Google Fiber.  Based in Miami, programming will encompass the economy, entertainment, music, food, immigration issues, pop culture, education, politics, health and wellness and more.

Atlanta’s social scene is the setting of Bravo Media’s next new docu-series, Married to Medicine, premiering Sunday, March 24 at 9p.  The series follows the lives of six of Atlanta’s socially elite women who are involved in the world of medicine as doctors or wives of doctors as they juggle busy careers and charitable events.  Married to Medicine is produced by FremantleMedia North America and developed by Purveyors of Pop.

Oxygen Media hosted its Upfront presentation last night in New York, the first network to unveil its plans for the coming season.  The network, still sporting its “Live Out Loud” branding and boasting it is the youngest skewing women’s network, announced it will expand its schedule of original planning from two to three nights each week. Oxygen Media President Jason Klarman admitted at the party that they’d love to increase their original offerings to five nights a week. “But for now we’re just putting one foot in front of the other,” he said.

A remake of the 1960s drama Ironside has surfaced at NBC.  The drama centers on acerbic police detective Robert T. Ironside who ends up in a wheelchair after being shot.  Blair Underwood is set to star in the reboot.  The one-hour drama is from Michael Caleo who will write and be an EP along with David Semel, Teri Weinberg, John Davis and Jon FoxUniversal Television, David Entertainment and Yellow Brick Road are all producing.  The original Ironside starred Raymond Burr and ran on NBC from 1967-75.

It’s official… James Caan has been cast in ABC’s Untitled Cullen Brothers comedy pilot from writers Mark and Robb Cullen.  The single-camera project is about Terry Gannon, a recently divorced, single mother who moves back in with her estranged father, a beer-drinking former baseball player.  Caan will play the father.  20th Century Fox TV is producing.

Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl IX, the network’s cute and fuzzy alternative to the Super Bowl drew its largest audience ever with more than 12.4 million unique total viewers over its 12-hour marathon.  During the Super Bowl blackout in New Orleans, Puppy Bowl IX’s viewership grew to 1.1 million total viewers from 851p-9p.  This represents a +54% increase compared to the delivery in the prior Puppy Bowl IX segment.  The premiere telecast from 3-5p delivered more than 2.6 million total viewers, a +64% growth over last year as well as 1.2 million among A18-49, a +94% increase over the prior year.

On Monday, TNT’s new medical drama Monday Mornings from creator David E. Kelley launched with 1.34 million total viewers at 10p, based on Nielsen Fast Nationals.  The drama decreased 40% from its Dallas lead-in and averaged just 386,000 among A18-49 and 472,000 with A25-54.

Oxygen Media’s upcoming new supermodel competition series The Face will debut on Oxygen as well as NBCUniversal sister networks Bravo and Style on February 12 at 9p.  The seven-episode series is produced by Shine America and will find the newest face of ULTA Beauty with fashion icons Naomi Campbell, Karolina Kurkova and Coco Rocha as supermodel coaches.  Photographer and personality Nigel Barker will serve as host.  Prior to the series launch, the one-hour special The Face: The Fight to Make The Final 12 is available via VOD, Oxygen.com, Hulu.com, iTunes and Oxygen Mobile starting as of yesterday and will premiere on the network February 5 at 9p.

The Sunday lineup of shows on SHOWTIME including Shameless, House of Lies and Californication was picked up for new seasons in 2014.  Currently, all three series are pacing above their previous seasons across platforms.  Shameless is up by +22% and averaging 5.4 million weekly viewers across platforms.  Season two of House of Lies is averaging 3.2 million weekly viewers across platforms, up +10% from its first season.  The sixth season of Californication is averaging 3.1 million weekly viewers, up +21% versus the fifth season.  Production on the series’ new seasons will begin in Los Angeles later this year.  Shameless is produced by Bonanza Productions, Inc. in association with John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Monday’s season five premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race on Logo at 9p averaged a 0.8 rating with A18-49, a +33% bump over Logo’s previous top-rated season premiere (the fourth season debut of RuPaul’s Drag Race) and is now the highest-rated season premiere in Logo’s history.  The 90-minute premiere episode also attracted 565,000 total viewers.  In addition the opening of companion series Untucked: RuPaul’s Drag Race delivered more than 1.3 million viewers.

The Charlize Theron-produced drama Hatfields & McCoys was approved to pilot by NBC.  Set in present-day Pittsburgh, the drama opens with a death that reignites the feud between two families, the blue-collar McCoys and the wealthy, powerful Hatfields.  Theron will be an EP along with A.J. Dix, Dawn Olmstead and Beau Flynn; John Glenn is on board to write the pilot.  ABC Studios is producing where Theron has an overall deal, in addition to Theron’s Denver & Delilah shingle, Tower Hill, Beau Flynn Productions and Grady Girl.

Former The Daily Show veteran Rob Corddry was cast in the starring role of ABC’s pilot Spy.  The project is based on a British comedy series about a well-intentioned father of a highly intelligent son who inadvertently takes a job at the secret service to prove he is a worthy father.  The single-camera comedy is from Simeon Goulden, the creator of the UK version.  Jimmy Mulville will serve as EP for his Hat Trick Productions.

TV One renews its popular reality series R&B Divas for a second season with production slated to begin in Atlanta this month. The second season will reunite the original cast for eight more episodes airing in Spring 2013. The network also is spinning off a second series dubbed R&B Divas: LA, which will follow five R&B performers in Los Angeles in an eight-episode order for third quarter of 2013. A third season of The Killing is in store after all on AMCFox Television Studios (FTVS) and AMC made a new deal to renew the series for a third season.  The deal also has Veena Sud back as executive producer, writer and showrunner.  Actors Mireille Enos (Sarah Linden) and Joel Kinnaman (Stephen Holder) are returning as well.  The third season will focus on a new case which will be resolved over the course of 12 episodes.  Production on the new season begins February 25 in Vancouver.  The Killing is produced by Fox Television Studios and is executive produced by Mikkel Bondesen for Bondesen Productions; Kristen Campo also serves as co-executive producer.

Travel Channel approved a new original series Tailgate Takeover hosted by food expert Adam Richman that goes to sporting events, concerts, festivals and fairs around the country anywhere tailgating happens.  The series will have 13 half-hour episodes and is slated to premiere this summer.  The network will give viewers a preview of the series with the special Super Bowl Tailgate Takeover airing on January 30 at 9p.  Both the series and the special are produced by Sharp Entertainment.

Clear Channel Media and Entertainment made an exclusive long-term agreement with Steve Harvey to renew and expand his relationship with the company.  The deal will see Harvey continue in his current role as host of The Steve Harvey Morning Show, a nationally syndicated radio show by Premiere Networks on an estimated 70 radio stations in the US that reaches nearly 6.0 million weekly listeners.  Harvey will further work with Clear Channel Media and Entertainment on a variety of joint projects and be a spokesperson for the company.

At its Television Critics Association Press Tour in Los Angeles, FOX announced a few news nuggets: the network has renewed Bones for a ninth season.  The procedural will return with all-new episodes starting next Monday and is produced by Far Field Productions and Josephson Entertainment in association with 20th Century Fox Television.  FOX also revealed it will premiere its new alternative late-night programming block, Animation Domination High-Def on July 27 at 11p.  The programming block will include several new quarter-hour animated series including Axe Cop, an action-comedy featuring Megan Mullally, Patton Oswalt and Ken Marino among others; High School USA! starring Vincent Kartheiser and Mandy Moore; and the Untitled Lucas Brothers Project where the stand-up comedy of New York-based identical twins Kenny and Keith Lucas will be animated.  FOX further announced development plans for two long-form event series, Wayward Pines from M. Night Shyamalan and FX Productions and Blood Brothers from Bruce C. McKenna, Gary Randall, Timothy Scott Bogart, Boardwalk Entertainment Group and Fox Television Studios.  FOX will order its first event series pilot(s) later in 2013 with the first one slated to debut in 2014.

CBS Sports will air Super Bowl XLVII on February 3 with the kick-off at 630p from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.  This is CBS’ 18th Super Bowl broadcast and CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz and Phil Simms will be calling the action.  Earlier in the day, CBS Sports will offer up seven hours of pre-game coverage starting with Road to the Super Bowl at 11a and the special, New Orleans: Let the Good Times Roll at 12 noon hosted by musician, composer and bandleader, Wynton Marsalis followed by other programming.  In addition, the Super Bowl will be streamed live via CBSSports.com and CBS Sports’ second-screen offerings will feature several interactive online and social elements.  Furthermore, CBS Corp. President/CEO Leslie Moonves said yesterday that CBS has sold out its ad inventory for the Super Bowl.  “We have sold some of our spots for the game for over $4 million for a 30-second spot,” said Moonves, who added that WCBS New York alone has sold spots for “over $1 million” for a 30-second advertisement.

All this week the Live Well Network is airing a five-part series Miss America: Secrets Revealed that gives viewers unprecedented access to the contestants leading up to the 92nd Miss America Competition.  Hosted by Live Well Network personality Rebecca Spera, all 53 pageant contestants will be interviewed and they will offer their beauty, fashion, fitness and other secrets.  The half-hour episodes began Monday and air through Friday, January 11 at 8p on the Live Well Network.  Miss America 2013 will air live January 12 on ABC.

Canada’s City announced production has commenced on the 13-episode, half-hour adult animated comedy series, Mother Up! starring Eva Longoria who is also the show’s EP.  The show is developed by Rogers Media and is co-produced by Canadian companies Breakthrough Entertainment and Bardel Entertainment in association with US-based Mass Animation.  Mother Up! will debut in fall 2013 on City in primetime and will be available in the US exclusively on the free, ad-supported Hulu and Hulu Plus subscription service.  Breakthrough Entertainment will also distribute the series worldwide outside of North America.

NBC ordered a new eight-episode, one-hour game show series Hollywood Game Night.  The series is from Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes and is based on his real-life game nights with celebrities.  The premise of the show will have two contestants playing games with celebrities to compete for a cash prize.  Hollywood Game Night is produced by Hazy Mills Productions, Mission Control Media and Universal Television.  Hayes, Todd Milliner, Michael Agbabian and Dwight D. Smith will all serve as executive producers.

Yesterday NBC reported its chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel and his network production team were freed from captors in Syria.  Engel and his team had been abducted and taken prisoner five days earlier soon after they crossed the border into Syria from Turkey.  NBC News released this statement yesterday: “After being kidnapped and held for five days inside Syria by an unknown group, NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and his production crew members have been freed unharmed. We are pleased to report they are safely out of the country.”

Nielsen revealed yesterday it will acquire its research rival Arbitron Inc. in a deal worth $1.26 billion.  In the past, Arbitron competed against Nielsen in providing local television ratings.  In more recent years, however Arbitron has concentrated on radio ratings and measuring out-of-home media consumption.

HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones is super-sizing the third season.  Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are adapting the largest of the Song of Ice and Fire novel by author George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords and as a result are producing slightly longer episodes for HBO.  The next season will still have 10 episodes and each one will clock in at 56- or 57-minutes in length versus the 52-minute episodes from last season.  Game of Thrones premieres season three on March 31 on HBO with the season two out on DVD on February 19.

Lifetime returns Project Runway for an 11th season with the series’ first-ever Teams Edition, premiering January 24 at 9p.  Host and judge Heidi Klum is back along with Marie Claire’s Fashion Director Nina Garcia and featured judge, fashion designer Zac Posen.  Tim Gunn will also return as mentor to the designers and Michael Kors will be the finale guest judge.  The 11th season will also feature guest judges from film, television and music including Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Miranda Lambert, John Legend, Joan and Melissa Rivers, Emmy Rossum, Kristin Davis, Jordana Brewster and designers Rachel Roy, Tracy Reese, Chris Benz and Project Runway winner Christian Siriano.  Lifetime will also air the special Road to the Runway prior to the premiere at 8p which serves as an introduction to the new competing designers.
