On Friday NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker announced he is exiting his position once the merger transaction between NBCU and Comcast Corp. is complete. Zucker said the timing was right for him to resign now since he met with Comcast COO Steve Burke two weeks ago where it was made known Comcast was looking for a change at the top. In a memo to staff, Zucker said “… it is clear to me that this is the right decision for me and for the company. Comcast will be a great new steward, just as GE has been, and they deserve the chance to implement their own vision.”  Looking back, Zucker’s current contract was renewed last year through January 2013 at an annual salary of $6.3 million and a guaranteed bonus of $1.5 million. His exit package states if he leaves by January, he can expect to take away $15.6 million. Furthermore, Zucker said he thought it was best for him to control his departure announcement versus having it leak out. “This is what happens (after mergers),” said Zucker. “It would’ve been unique in business for this not to happen. I didn’t want to be a guest in my own house.”

In an update released late yesterday, Comcast Corp. and General Electric moved to appoint Comcast COO Steve Burke as CEO of NBC Universal once the merger of the two entities, valued at $30 billion, is complete.  That deal is expected to be finalized by year’s end.  Burke will additionally continue as Comcast’s COO.

Netflix stock hit a record high on Friday, the day after Blockbuster announced its restructuring plan.
