In honor of her milestone 80th birthday on June 8, Joan Rivers will be taking over E!‘s airwaves for five days, beginning Monday, June 10. From extra episodes of Fashion Police airing daily, to popping up on the network’s other series, to special birthday content appearing on Eonline, Rivers will bring her unfiltered comedy to all areas of the network. Despite the show’s writers still being on strike, E! will air a brand-new half-hour episode of Fashion Police every night Monday, June 10  through Thursday, June 13 at 10:30p, culminating with a special full hour birthday salute to Rivers on Friday, June 14 at 10p. The half-hour special episodes will feature guest appearances by celebrities, friends, and even some victims of Rivers’ past critiques. In addition, Rivers will make daily appearances on E! News, surprise Joel McHale during the July 12 episode of The Soup, and even stay up late one night to invade the set of Chelsea Lately.

Dan Harmon, creator of NBC‘s Community, is in talks with Sony Pictures Television to return to the series in some capacity for its upcoming fifth season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show’s fourth season, which was overseen by David Guarascio and Moses Port, had some critics noting that it had lost the edge it had under Harmon.

From plastic surgeon to US President: Hot off his role as glossy Dr. Jack Startz in the HBO biopic Behind the Candelabra, Rob Lowe has been announced as the star of the upcoming National Geographic Channel factual drama Killing Kennedy from Scott Free Productions. He’ll play the President John F. Kennedy. Ginnifer Goodwin will join Lowe in the White House as first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, while Michelle Trachtenberg rounds out the cast as Lee Harvey Oswald’s wife, Marina. Killing Kennedy will premiere on the National Geographic Channel later this year in the United States and globally in 171 countries and 38 languages, timed to the 50th anniversary of the assassination.

ABC World News anchor Diane Sawyer will conduct the first U.S. television interview with Malala Yousafzai, the 15-year-old schoolgirl from Pakistan who was shot by the Taliban in October 2012, over her belief that girls should have the right to attend school. Sawyer’s interview will air in October on all ABC News broadcasts and platforms, including World News with Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America and Nightline as well as ABC News.com, Yahoo! and ABC News Radio. The interview will air in conjunction with the publication of I Am Malala, this October, which marks the one-year anniversary of the assassination attempt on Yousafzai’s life.

Jerry Bruckheimer’s upcoming thriller pilot Hostages, ordered by CBS, will have Toni Collette in the lead role.  Collette (United States of Tara) stars as Ellen, a Washington, D.C. surgeon who becomes embroiled in a political conspiracy after being chosen to operate on the POTUS.  Her family is taken hostage and it’s up to her to save their lives.  Hostages is based on an Israeli format by Alon Aranya, Omri Givon and Rotem Shamir though it was never produced.  For the CBS version, Jerry Bruckheimer Television and Warner Bros. Television are producing with Jeffrey Nachmanoff involved as writer and director. Jonathan Littman, Givon, Shamir and Chayim Sharir join Bruckheimer and Nachmanoff as EPs.

Rosemarie DeWitt is departing HBO’s Newsroom.  The actress had been cast in a recurring role for the second season of Aaron Sorkin’s drama, playing Rebecca Halliday, a litigator who defends the fictional Atlantis Cable News channel when it becomes involved in a wrongful termination lawsuit.  DeWitt’s role will be recast and any scenes involving DeWitt will also be reshot.

Two are joining HBO’s True Blood: former Friday Night Lights alum Jurnee Smollett becomes a series regular for the upcoming sixth season playing Nicole, a goody-goody who has a positive rosy outlook on life.  90210’s Amelia Rose Blaire will play Willa, the daughter of Louisiana Governor Truman Burrell (Arliss Howard) who has clashed with her father over vampire rights.  True Blood is set to debut season six in June.

The series premiere of BET’s Real Husbands of Hollywood on Tuesday at 10p drew 4.1 million viewers.  Combining the 11p encore airing, Real Husbands of Hollywood tallied a total of 6.5 million total viewers for the night.  The second new series, Second Generation Wayans debuted at 1030p and attracted 3.4 million total viewers and when combined with its 1130p encore, the program totaled 4.7 million total viewers for the night.  All together, BET’s new Tuesday night block amassed more than 11 million total viewers.

The season three premiere of MTV2’s Guy Code broke network records Tuesday night by posting a 0.5 rating with P12-34 becoming the highest rated and most watched original season debut in network history.  The telecast also delivered 323,000 viewers among P12-34.  The show also posted a 0.8 rating with M12-34.

Conrad Bain, best known for playing a rich businessman who adopts two little boys from Harlem in the sitcom Diff’rent Strokes has died at the age of 89.  Mr. Bain is also remembered for playing Dr. Arthur Harmon, the blundering next-door neighbor on the CBS sitcom Maude.  Throughout his career, he had also appeared in a number of television commercials and his other TV series credits include Studio One in Hollywood, The Defenders, Dark Shadows and Grandpa Goes to Washington among more recent appearances in the Diff’rent Strokes spinoff The Facts of Life, The Love Boat and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air among many others.  Mr. Bain also appeared on stage, in telefilms and theatrical movies including Lovers and Other Strangers (1970), Jump (1971), A Fan’s Notes (1972) and Postcards From the Edge (1990) as well as other titles.  Mr. Bain is survived by his wife, Monica Sloan; three sons; one daughter; and a brother.

At its Television Critics Association Press Tour in Los Angeles, FOX announced a few news nuggets: the network has renewed Bones for a ninth season.  The procedural will return with all-new episodes starting next Monday and is produced by Far Field Productions and Josephson Entertainment in association with 20th Century Fox Television.  FOX also revealed it will premiere its new alternative late-night programming block, Animation Domination High-Def on July 27 at 11p.  The programming block will include several new quarter-hour animated series including Axe Cop, an action-comedy featuring Megan Mullally, Patton Oswalt and Ken Marino among others; High School USA! starring Vincent Kartheiser and Mandy Moore; and the Untitled Lucas Brothers Project where the stand-up comedy of New York-based identical twins Kenny and Keith Lucas will be animated.  FOX further announced development plans for two long-form event series, Wayward Pines from M. Night Shyamalan and FX Productions and Blood Brothers from Bruce C. McKenna, Gary Randall, Timothy Scott Bogart, Boardwalk Entertainment Group and Fox Television Studios.  FOX will order its first event series pilot(s) later in 2013 with the first one slated to debut in 2014.

CBS Sports will air Super Bowl XLVII on February 3 with the kick-off at 630p from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.  This is CBS’ 18th Super Bowl broadcast and CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz and Phil Simms will be calling the action.  Earlier in the day, CBS Sports will offer up seven hours of pre-game coverage starting with Road to the Super Bowl at 11a and the special, New Orleans: Let the Good Times Roll at 12 noon hosted by musician, composer and bandleader, Wynton Marsalis followed by other programming.  In addition, the Super Bowl will be streamed live via CBSSports.com and CBS Sports’ second-screen offerings will feature several interactive online and social elements.  Furthermore, CBS Corp. President/CEO Leslie Moonves said yesterday that CBS has sold out its ad inventory for the Super Bowl.  “We have sold some of our spots for the game for over $4 million for a 30-second spot,” said Moonves, who added that WCBS New York alone has sold spots for “over $1 million” for a 30-second advertisement.

All this week the Live Well Network is airing a five-part series Miss America: Secrets Revealed that gives viewers unprecedented access to the contestants leading up to the 92nd Miss America Competition.  Hosted by Live Well Network personality Rebecca Spera, all 53 pageant contestants will be interviewed and they will offer their beauty, fashion, fitness and other secrets.  The half-hour episodes began Monday and air through Friday, January 11 at 8p on the Live Well Network.  Miss America 2013 will air live January 12 on ABC.

Last Sunday’s season nine premiere of Watch What Happen Live on Bravo attracted more than 1.7 million total viewers and one million plus with A18-49.  On Monday Bravo debuted new series, Vanderpump Rules at 10p which drew in more than 1.0 million with A18-49; 1.2 million among A25-54; and 1.9 million total viewers, making it the network’s highest-rated new series launch since Bethenny Getting Married? in June 2010.

Canada’s City announced production has commenced on the 13-episode, half-hour adult animated comedy series, Mother Up! starring Eva Longoria who is also the show’s EP.  The show is developed by Rogers Media and is co-produced by Canadian companies Breakthrough Entertainment and Bardel Entertainment in association with US-based Mass Animation.  Mother Up! will debut in fall 2013 on City in primetime and will be available in the US exclusively on the free, ad-supported Hulu and Hulu Plus subscription service.  Breakthrough Entertainment will also distribute the series worldwide outside of North America.

An average of 7.9 million total viewers watched the season three premiere of MASTERPIECE CLASSIC’s Downton Abbey on PBS Sunday night, per Nielsen Fast National data.  The season three premiere episode quadrupled the average PBS primetime rating and delivered a +96% increase over the second season premiere of Downton Abbey the previous year (based on metered market averages).  The highest local market ratings were at PBS member stations KCTS/Seattle (9.6 rating/17 share); WGBH/Boston (8.8/14); KLRU/Austin (8.1/13) and WNET/New York (8.0/12).  Downton Abbey is a Carnival/MASTERPIECE co-production.

PBS’ primetime series Antiques Roadshow, debuting its 17th season last night, will be taping new shows over the summer for its 18th broadcast season premiering in January 2014.  Antiques Roadshow’s 2013 tour dates which feature antique appraisals by top appraisers include Detroit on June 1; Jacksonville, FL on June 8; Anaheim, CA on June 22; Boise, ID on June 29; Knoxville, TN on July 13; Baton Rouge, LA on July 27; Kansas City, MO on August 10; and Richmond, VA on August 17.  Admission to the appraisal events are free though tickets are required and must be obtained in advance.  Ticket applications and ticketing rules are available at pbs.org/antiques.

Following his win of two Olympic Gold Medals at the 2012 London Games, swimmer Ryan Lochte is starring in a new docu-series on E! titled What Would Ryan Lochte Do?.  This new six-episode series will follow the superstar athlete who, based on the show’s central question, would do just about anything for love, family, his friends and more.  Produced by Intuitive Entertainment, E! will debut the series this April.

In the New Year, VH1 is getting a makeover involving a new brand identity across linear, digital and social media platforms.  VH1’s new logo will include a plus sign (+) within the VH1 letters and number which is now being referred to its signature tagmark rather than a tagline.  The plus sign is included to represent the network’s dedication to offering music, pop culture and nostalgia programming.  The strategy and redesign were developed in part by design company, Gretel, and ad agency Hill Holliday will create a 360-degree creative launch strategy.

Making it official, Prospect Park is resurrecting canceled daytime soaps All My Children and One Life to Live which aired on ABC for 41 years and 43 years respectively.  Both soaps would air on Prospect Park’s The Online Network.  After The Online Network has signed guild agreements with both SAG-AFTRA and the DGA, production will begin in February.  Agnes Nixon, the creator of both shows will be involved as a consultant.  Jennifer Pepperman will serve as Executive Producer for One Life to Live and Ginger Smith will be EP of All My Children.
