The death of beloved actor Andy Griffith last Tuesday at the age of 86 was felt by many. Mr. Griffith, who played Sheriff Andy Taylor on the endearing television series The Andy Griffith Show which ran from 1960-1968 on CBS, was lauded by North Carolina’s Governor Beverly Perdue who said, “North Carolina has lost its favorite son.” President Barack Obama said he was sad to learn of Mr. Griffith’s death and said in a statement, “A performer of extraordinary talent, Andy was beloved by generations of fans and revered by entertainers who followed in his footstep.” Ron Howard, who played Mr. Griffith’s son Opie on the comedy series, set in the fictional town of Mayberry, NC (which was believed to be based on Mr. Griffith’s own hometown of Mount Airy, NC) said via EW’s website, “He was fantastic. There was a fantastic equilibrium between his love of laughter and jokes and funny stories and songs and all that, and then he could turn on a dime and be the utmost professional.” In addition to making an impact with television audiences, Mr. Griffith is also remembered for his riveting performance in Elia Kazan’s film A Face in the Crowd (1957) playing opposite Patricia Neal. He later played a small-town sheriff in an episode of the television series The Danny Thomas Show which led to The Andy Griffith Show. Don Knotts, who had previously appeared with Mr. Griffith in the stage and screen versions of No Time for Sergeants and had seen The Danny Thomas Show episode, suggested to Mr. Griffith that his sheriff character would need a deputy side-kick. Mr. Knotts joined the cast as the lovable but bungling Deputy Barney Fife, the role which won Mr. Knotts five Emmy Awards. The Griffith-Knotts friendship continued strong until Mr. Knotts’ death in February 2006. In 1968, The Andy Griffith Show was No. 1 in the ratings and that same year, Mr. Griffith decided to depart from the show. A spin-off show, Mayberry R.F.D. continued without him featuring new and returning supporting characters before it ended in 1971. In 1986, Mr. Griffith reprised his Andy Taylor role for a reunion TV movie, Return to Mayberry. Mr. Griffith returned to series television in a second popular role as criminal defense attorney Ben Matlock in the show Matlock which first aired from 1986 until 1992 on NBC and then until May 1995 on ABC. On Broadway, Mr. Griffith was nominated for two Tony awards, first in 1956 for his role in No Time for Sergeants and again in 1960 for the musical Destry Rides Again. Also a recording artist, Mr. Griffith won a Grammy award in 1996 for his gospel album, I Love To Tell The Story. Mr. Griffith is survived by his third wife, Cindi Knight Griffith whom he married in 1983 and two children from his first marriage.

Science fiction author Ray Bradbury died on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 91. Many of Mr. Bradbury’s stories and novels were adapted for television, radio, film and stage. Examples include his 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451 adapted as a theatrical film in 1966 directed by Francois Truffaut and starring Oskar Werner and Julie Christie. Much later his 1950 novel The Martian Chronicles was adapted into a miniseries for NBC in 1980 that starred Rock Hudson. Mr. Bradbury himself wrote three of the episodes. More recently, new film adaptations of both works are in development. Looking back, some of television’s classic anthology shows such as Tales of Tomorrow, Lights Out, CBS Television Workshop, Jane Wyman’s Fireside Theatre and Alfred Hitchcock Presents adapted his stories. During the same period, many of his stories were also adapted to radio dramas especially for the sci-fi anthologies Dimension X and its successor X Minus One. In addition, Mr. Bradbury’s short story I Sing the Body Electric was adapted into the 100th episode of The Twilight Zone in 1962 and later Mr. Bradbury adapted the story himself for the 1982 telepic The Electric Grandmother. From 1985 to 1992, Mr. Bradbury hosted The Ray Bradbury Theater, a syndicated anthology series for television for which he adapted 65 of his stories. Mr. Bradbury is survived by four daughters. His wife of 57 years, Marguerite Bradbury preceded him in death in 2003.
