CASTING CALL
Executive producers for FOX’s musical series Glee are hosting national casting calls, searching for young talented performers to fill new roles during the show’s second season. Starting yesterday, amateur and professional performers, age 16 to 26, are invited to submit five-minute audition videos via MySpace at myspace.com/gleeauditions . The deadline to submit videos is April 26, 2010. The submitted videos must include a one-minute explanation why the participant wants to be on the show and a 4-minute demonstration of their singing ability by performing one of Glee’s hits such as True Colors, You Can’t Always Get What You Want and Lean on Me. The singer must sing a cappella or with a single instrument accompaniment via MySpace Karaoke or by uploading their own pre-recorded videos.

Friday’s two-hour Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief telethon raised more than $57 million from the general public with more being tallied from corporations, larger private donors and iTunes sales figures. So far, the single “Hope for Haiti Now” is the top-selling iTunes album in 18 countries, making it the biggest single day album pre-order for iTunes ever. The telethon attracted a total of 16.1 million viewers across six broadcast networks with a 4.3 rating among A18-49. ABC had the largest broadcast audience of 4.6 million viewers. These preliminary TV ratings do not include major cable networks such as MTV, CNN and VH1. Donations can still be taken for Haiti relief by visiting HopeForHaitiNow .org or by calling 877-99-HAITI.

Veteran film actress Jean Simmons, 80 died last Friday due to lung cancer. Throughout her impressive film career that began in 1944, Jean starred with the likes of Gregory Peck, Spencer Tracy, Kirk Douglas and Laurence Olivier and she won a Golden Globe for the 1955 musical Guys and Dolls starring opposite Marlon Brando. Jean also starred on stage in Sondheim’s musical A Little Night Music then later appeared on such TV shows as Murder, She Wrote and Star Trek: The Next Generation and the memorable 1983 TV miniseries The Thorn Birds from which she won an Emmy Award. Jean is survived by two daughters, Tracy Granger and Kate Brooks.

James Mitchell, who portrayed Pine Valley millionaire Palmer Cortlandt on ABC’s All My Children, died last Friday in Los Angeles of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease along with pneumonia. James’ last appearance on All My Children happened earlier this month on January 5, marking the daytime drama’s 40th anniversary episode. Prior to his 30-year stint on All My Children, James was an accomplished dancer appearing in leading roles on Broadway in such musicals Brigadoon, Carousel, Carnival, Paint Your Wagon among others in addition to dancing with the American Ballet Theater in New York, Europe and South America and touring with the Agnes de Mille Dance Theater throughout the US. He also appeared in a number of films including That’s Dancing, The Turning Point, The Bandwagon with Fred Astaire and Deep In My Heart with Cyd Charisse. James is survived by his partner Albert Wolsky. Memorial services will take place at a later date.

Bravo’s next reality competition series will join the forces of Sarah Jessica Parker and her production company, Pretty Matches with Magical Elves (Top Chef, Project Runway) and Eli Holzman to produce a reality series dubbed The Untitled Art Project.
