Everything old is new again… for now. “The Howard Stern Show,” which was once broadcast as a television series to CBS affiliate stations in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, is now coming to HBO Max.
-In the summer of 2025, rumors suggested that Stern, 72, would retire or perhaps had been fired by SiriusXM after 20 years with the radio network. Instead, Stern announced a deal renewal with SiriusXM in December for three more years.
-More recently, however, Stern shut down his secondary channel, laid off a dozen staffers and cut back to one new episode per week, prompting speculation that he might finally retire after his latest contract ends in 2028.
-Now, an adaptation of the weekly radio show will begin airing on HBO Max Sept. 17 at 12:01 a.m.
–The Takeaway: It’s no secret that streaming services are trying to capitalize on video podcasts, snapping up talent from YouTube, iHeartMedia and SiriusXM. Stern is a big get for HBO, and his own history with video predates the current trend – but it might not last for long.

The HBO Original documentary series, “A Killer Story,” premieres Sept. 10, with installments available to stream on HBO Max. The three-part docuseries investigates the double homicide case against Dana Chandler, which captured the nation’s attention for more than two decades. The series is directed by Matthew Galkin and executive produced by Joshua Levine, Liz Garbus, Dan Cogan and Jon Bardin.

Looks like Netflix’s most recent gambit paid off. Total app downloads for Netflix increased by 24% as a result of the streamer’s “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” on Thursday, according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower. The 27-minute long special, which featured exclusive footage from the long-awaited video game, also shot to the front of Netflix’s top-10 movie list – and some Letterboxd users are even logging reviews for the trailer as if it were a movie.

Speaking of video games and television, Sony announced the launch of Live TV on PlayStation 5, an app containing more than 100 free ad-supported video channels from a variety of content providers. Sony will work with connected TV ad platforms Publica and PubMatic to fill the ad inventory.

Paris Hilton is producing a documentary for Roku about a topic she knows well: being famous in the ‘00s. “The It Girls: Inside the 2000s” will air next year. In addition to Paris Hilton’s company, 11:11 Media, the doc will also be produced by EverWonder Studio (“Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model”) and Hi Mom Productions (“Million Dollar Nannies”).
