A pause has been put on Nextstar’s merger with Tegna. On Friday, a federal judge sided with DirecTV, which claims the deal federal violates antitrust laws, and granted a temporary restraining order to halt the transaction. “Plaintiff asserts Nexstar’s proposed merger with Tegna will drive up the cost of television service to tens of millions of Americans, shutter local newsrooms around the country, substantially reduce competition in dozens of local markets, and harm consumers,” wrote U.S. District Judge Troy Nunley. The running bars Nextstar and Tegna from integrating operation for 14 days. A hearing has been set for April 7 on whether to issue a preliminary injunction. Several states, along with Newsmax and a group of state broadband and cable groups, are also challenging the FCC’s approval of the merger, which would create the largest operator of local television stations in the country.
