The Writers’ Guild of America said it will work with regulators to block a potential merger of Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount. “Merger after merger in the media industry has harmed workers, diminished competition and free speech, and wasted hundreds of billions of dollars better invested in organic growth,” said the WGAW and WGAE in a joint statement. “Combining Warner Bros. with Paramount or another major studio or streamer would be a disaster for writers, for consumers, and for competition.” Paramount has made three offers for WBD; there has been speculation that Netflix and Amazon are considering jumping in as well.

With the deadline for a new distribution deal fast approaching, Disney began running public announcements on YouTube TV warning subscribers that its networks could go dark this week. The companies’ current agreement expires at midnight on Thursday, October 30. YouTube TV’s parent company has taken a hardline stance in recent negotiations, arguing that its growth to 10 million subscribers has earned it more favorable terms. Fox Corp., NBCUniversal and Paramount all clashed publicly with the distributor before striking new deals, while Univision channels went dark on September 30 after talks broke down.
