NBC News anchor Chuck Todd has left the building. Todd joined NBC News as political director in 2007, and served as moderator on “Meet the Press” from 2014-23. “There’s never a perfect time to leave a place that’s been a professional home for so long, but I’m pretty excited about a few new projects that are on the cusp of going from ‘pie in the sky’ to ‘near reality,’” said Todd in a memo to staff on Friday, his last day at NBC. As for the public’s all-time low confidence in the media, Todd said the way to fix the information ecosystem is to “stop whining about the various ways the social media companies are manipulating things and instead roll up our collective sleeves and start with local. National media can’t win trust back without having a robust partner locally.”

Millennials are expected to lead Super Bowl viewership, accounting for 31% of the audience, with Gen Z close behind (27%), according to data from Nexxen. Fifty-one percent of viewers will stream via apps or vMVPDs, outpacing traditional cable and satellite, and nearly 50% of viewers will use mobile devices during the game, with Gen Z driving second-screen engagement. As for the impact of Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce’s girlfriend Taylor Swift cheering in the stands, thanks in large part to the singer’s presence, female audiences are 3.5x more likely to consume NFL-related content this year, compared to 2.8x last year, reports Nexxen. Female consumption of football content has risen by 22% year over year.

Lawmakers have proposed a bill that would require cable companies to compensate customers for blackouts due to carriage disputes. “It’s outrageous that millions of folks couldn’t watch the Knicks, ‘Judy Justice,’ or dozens of other programs for weeks because of blackouts — and, it’s even more ridiculous that we’re all still paying for the right to stare at black screens,” said Representative Pat Ryan in a statement on Friday. Added Senator Chris Murphy, “Our bill is simple: if cable companies can’t provide the service you’re paying for, they owe you a refund.”

The “Stop Sports Blackout Act” was inspired by the ongoing dispute between Optimum TV and MSG Networks. While the proposed bill got a thumbs up from MSG Networks – “We appreciate Senator Murphy and Congressman Ryan’s efforts to fight for sports fans who are stuck paying for content they aren’t receiving, while Altice pockets their money,” said the cable TV station – a statement from the American Television Alliance warned, “Requiring pay-tv providers to pay rebates will only encourage big broadcasters to further increase prices at a time when retransmission consent fees are at record highs.”

Meanwhile, MSG Networks is in talks to avoid bankruptcy, reports The New York Post. Lenders have extended the payment deadline for the $829 million they are owed a number of times, with the most recent extension ending January 31. The Post suggested Amazon, which has been expanding Prime Video’s regional sports streaming coverage, could step in to help refinance the debt.
