The NBA has filed a motion to dismiss Warner Bros. Discovery’s media rights lawsuit, on the grounds that the TNT Sports parent improperly sought to rewrite the nature of its matching rights while “attempting instead to save billions of dollars.” The league, which rejected WBD’s matching rights proposal after signing deals with Amazon, Disney and NBCUniversal, claims WBD changed structural details and presumed rights that the NBA says WBD didn’t have, maintaining, “Far from accepting each term of Amazon’s offer, TBS’s revisions constituted a counteroffer that the NBA was free to reject.” Warner is accusing the NBA of structuring Amazon’s $1.8 billion per year package of games differently for “the sole purpose of attempting to thwart TBS’s matching rights.” Warner Bros. Discovery has until September has until September 20 to respond.

Warner Bros. Discovery is “beefing up” original programming on TNT,according to The Wall Street Journal, increasing spend on dramas that will appeal to the male audience tuned in for the network’s sports programming. Like many media companies, cost-conscious WBD has pared down original content in recent years. But with the possible loss of NBA rights, the company – in addition to scooping up other sports rights – is looking at offering more fresh programming. Films from the Warner Bros. movie library could also be rebooted for made-for-TV movies or series, sources told WSJ.
