Hulu’s “Shogun” scored 25 Emmy nominations yesterday, more than any other series. FX’s “The Bear” came close with 23, a record for the comedy category. Other big winners included Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” (21), HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” (19) and Netflix’s “The Crown” (18). Overall, Netflix nabbed the most noms with 107. FX leapfrogged over HBO/Max (which earned 91) to take second place with its best-ever haul, 93. Among broadcast networks, ABC and CBS each earned 38 nominations, NBC had 33, and Fox landed six.

Warner Bros. Discovery plans to match Amazon’s deal for rights to NBA games, reports Deadline. After WBD’s exclusive negotiating window with the NBA expired in April, the league reportedly set 11-year deals with Disney, NBCUniversal and Amazon – for which WBD had matching rights. TNT has aired NBA games since 1989.

Vice President Kamala Harris has agreed to three dates for a VP debatewith Republican contender J.D. Vance on CBS. “On May 16, Vice President Harris accepted the very first invitation we received from a television network to host a Vice Presidential Debate. She agreed at that time to participate in a CBS-hosted debate on either Tuesday, July 23 or Tuesday, August 13,” said a campaign official. “Since then, CBS has offered – and the VP has accepted – another potential date for this debate: Monday, August 12.” The next presidential debate is scheduled for September 10 on ABC.

Reality TV production is a (mostly) man’s world, according to a study commissioned by the Geena Davis Institute, Banijay Entertainment and Everywoman Studios. In the US, 80.6% of reality show creators are men, by the report’s reckoning, and men make up 58.4% of executive producers, supervisors and show creators across the US, UK, Brazil and France. On the bright side, the number of female executive producers rose from 36.6% in 2021 to 46.0% in 2023.

Location filming in LA for reality TV dropped 57% in 2Q24 versus the same period last year, according to a report from FilmLA. Other genres fared much better – TV drama production jumped by 98.3%, and comedy rose 103.6%. What gives? “Generally speaking, unscripted television is a location-heavy format that generates significant permit volume,” said FilmLA VP Integrated Communications Philip Sokoloski. “The employment impact of reality production is lower than it is for scripted TV, and projects are not incentive-eligible through the State of California.”

UK-based production company Nest Productions has partnered with Studio 1 to provide production services for quiz show “Lucky 13.” The Nest team worked both on the pilot, shot in Salford, England and on last month’s production at Worre Studios in Las Vegas. It was the first time the Vegas facilities had been used for broadcast purposes. “Lucky 13” premieres tonight on ABC.

HGTV’s “Good Bones” returns for a three-week limited run on Wednesday, August 14 at 9p. The extended 90-minute premiere episode will showcase Mina Starsiak Hawk’s journey through a rocky home buying process and the renovation of her lakeside retreat. The Angel City Football Club has entered into an agreement that will make Disney CEO Bob Iger and his wife Willow Bay, dean of the USC Annenberg School, the new controlling owners of the women’s soccer team. “Willow and Bob bring unparalleled operational experience, expertise, and passion to ACFC and to the NWSL,” said the ACFC Board of Directors in a statement. “They’re lifelong sports fans who have been supporters of ACFC since the team’s founding. The first night of the Republican National Convention drew an estimated 18.13 million viewers, according to Nielsen, among whom 13.53 million were 55+. Fox News Channel was the most-watched television network, averaging 6.86 million viewers, followed by ABC (2.28 million), NBC (2.24 million), CBS (1.82 million), MSNBC (1.27 million), and CNN (1.11 million). Day two of the event brought 5.15 million viewers to Fox News for the 10p hour, according to early Nielsen numbers, followed by NBC (2.23 million, ABC (2.013 million), CBS (1.56 million), CNN (934,000) and MSNBC (758,000).
