Amid a carriage dispute that left Disney cable channels dark on Charter, Charter issued an update on Friday. “We believe that renewing a traditional distribution deal in line with The Walt Disney Company’s current offer would ignore the realities of today’s video business and accelerate its decline,” said the company. “We do not take this decision lightly. For 2023, we had expected to pay The Walt Disney Company more than $2.2 billion for just the right to carry that content, not including the impact of advertising on either party. But we have reached a precipice and must chart a path to change.”

Disney has a different take. “Contrary to their claims, we have offered Charter the most favorable terms on rates, distribution, packaging, advertising and more,” said the company in a statement. “We have proposed creative ways to make Disney’s direct-to-consumer services available to their Spectrum TV subscribers, including opportunities for new and flexible packages where those services become a focal point of what the consumer might choose.” Disney also said, “Consumers should also know that they have many options today and can choose from competing pay TV providers that offer Disney’s entire portfolio of networks and programming, as well as TV streaming services that can be accessed by downloading an app or over a broadband connection.”

A study by the European Commission found that X (formerly Twitter)has played a major role in allowing Russian propaganda about Ukraine to reach more people than before the war began, despite voluntary commitments to take action against Russian propaganda by most major social media companies. “Over the course of 2022, the audience and reach of Kremlin-aligned social media accounts increased substantially all over Europe,” the study found. “Preliminary analysis suggests that the reach and influence of Kremlin-backed accounts has grown further in the first half of 2023, driven in particular by the dismantling of Twitter’s safety standards.”

Costner said he was offered $24 million to do seasons five, six and seven, but “there were issues about creative” with creator Taylor Sheridan and producers and “they walked away.” The series will end after season five, which is midway through production.

“We are not on strike out of greed, nor do we begrudge the companies their success or deny their struggles. We must all succeed together,” said WGA Negotiating Committee co-chair Chris Keyser in a Labor Day video for WGA members. “But the changes that the companies have orchestrated in the business have made the profession of writing untenable for us and for everyone who comes after us….It’s a hard thing to give up on something that has served them so well for 40 years. They are in the process of wrestling amongst themselves, ramping up their public relations, and coming to terms with the fact that – with writers on strike – and actors on strike behind them – this negotiation is different. And they are going to have to do more – offer more – than they usually do. Much of our frustration with how long this is taking stems from that – from their internal bargaining. But they will get there.”

The SAG-AFTRA national board has voted to send a strike authorization vote to members ahead of its bargaining dates with ten video game companies. “Once again we are facing employer greed and disrespect,” said guild president Fran Drescher. “Once again artificial intelligence is putting our members in jeopardy of reducing their opportunity to work. And once again, SAG-AFTRA is standing up to tyranny on behalf of its members.” A spokesperson for the video game companies said, “We are negotiating in good faith and hope to reach a mutually beneficial deal as soon as possible.”
