The writers’ and actors’ strikes could have a major impact on the advertising industry, according to a report from MediaRadar. Research showed that talk shows, soap operas, and sitcoms – genres dark during the strikes – accounted for 9%, or $2.36 billion, of TV ad expenditure in the first half of 2023. “TV broadcasters could be hit hard if this strike continues for many more months,” said Todd Krizelman, CEO, MediaRadar. “Lucrative late night talk shows specifically have been off the air already for a couple months. Soon, fall programming, including talk shows, soap operas, and primetime sitcoms should air. However, that is likely to be delayed since they rely on writers throughout the summer for scripts.”

Amid backlash over its interim agreements, which allow independent projects to proceed during the strike as long as they agree to the eventual deal with studios, SAG-AFTRA issued a message to members. “The Interim Agreement gives many of our journeyman performers and crews the opportunity to pay their rent and feed their families,” said the guild. “This approach maintains our strength, solidarity and upper hand with the AMPTP until they yield to the deal we deserve. The Interim Agreement is not a waiver. To be clear, it is a contract that includes all terms and conditions for producers looking to employ our members on their specific independent productions.
