The PGA Tour had no choice but to reach a merger deal with the Saudi-funded LIV Tour, said PGA officials during a Senate hearing on Tuesday. Responding to Connecticut Democrat’s Richard Blumenthal’s comment that the hearing “is about much more than the game of golf. It’s about how a brutal, repressive regime can buy influence, and indeed even take over a cherished American institution to cleanse its public image,” PGA Tour board member Jimmy Dunne said, “I really understand Sen. Blumenthal’s concern about having them take over….I’m concerned with what the senator is worried about. But I’m concerned if we do nothing we’re going to end up there, they’re going to end up owning golf. They can do it.” Republican Ron Johnson of Wisconsin defended the PGA Tour, saying, “It would be grossly unfair to expect the PGA Tour to bear the full burden of holding Saudi Arabia accountable. After all, anyone who drives a car or uses oil-based products has helped fill the coffers of the Saudi Public Investment fund.”
