Not surprisingly, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew did not have an easy time of it at the House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on Thursday. Faced with the Biden administration’s threat to ban the app unless its Chinese owners agree to spin off their share of the platform, Chew characterized the Chinese government’s access to TikTok’s user data as “hypothetical and theoretical risks.” But Chew faced questions about user videos that promote suicide (“Your technology is literally leading to death,” said Rep. Gus Bilirakis), and a post that contained information about the hearing that was underway, including a picture of an assault weapon (“You expect us to believe that you are capable of maintaining the data security, privacy and security of a 150 million Americans where you can’t even protect people in this room,” said Rep. Kat Cammack). “This hasn’t been a fun day. I know that,” Rep. Russ Fulcher told Chew as the hits piled on. “It hasn’t been a fun day for us either.”

This doesn’t even take into account the lack of protections for minors, and the extreme addictiveness of the service.”
