Ncuti Gatwa (“Sex Education”) is taking over as the Doctor in the BBC’s “Doctor Who.” “Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars,” said Russell T Davies, who is returning as showrunner after his last run ended in 2009. “Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds.” Jodie Whitaker’s last episode is expected to air later this year.

CBS has given multi-year pickups to series across the “FBI” franchise.The net renewed “FBI” for seasons five and six; “FBI: Most Wanted” for seasons four and five; and “FBI: International” for second and third seasons. “The FBIs are one of the most successful brands in the entire TV landscape and a powerful cornerstone of our number one lineup,” said Kelly Kahl, President of CBS Entertainment. “They’ve attracted a dedicated, loyal fan base, thanks to the extraordinary vision of executive producer Dick Wolf and the talents of all three outstanding casts and creative teams. I know we and our viewers look forward to two additional seasons of engaging, heroic stories.”

CBS soap “The Young and the Restless” nabbed the most 2022 Daytime Emmy nominations, with 18, followed by ABC’s “General Hospital” with 17. Fresh twist: NBC’s “Days of Our Lives” will compete for Best Daytime Drama with its Peacock spinoff, “Days of Our Lives: Beyond Salem.” Among talk shows, “The Kelly Clarkson Show” landed the most nods, with 10, and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” in its final year, failed to secure a nomination for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host for the first time in 18 years. CBS will air the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony Friday, June 24 at 9p.

A limited series adaptation of Toni Morrison novel Sula is in development at HBO. The project, following two Black women from the same neighborhood who take divergent paths, comes from Shannon M. Houston (“Station Eleven”), who has an overall deal at HBO, and Homegrown Pictures, under the company’s first-look deal with Warner Bros. Television Group and HBO.

FilmRise has entered a deal with Lorne Michaels’ Above Average to create streaming TV episodes featuring comedy sketches taken from the over 40 hours available from the Above Average library. FilmRise will distribute the newly formatted comedy series to digital platforms as well as feature it on the FilmRise Comedy AVOD App and its FAST Channels.
