Twitter has accepted Elon Musk’s offer to buy the company for $44 billion. “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” said Musk. “I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans.” On April 14, Musk offered to buy Twitter for $54.20 per share, which was the final purchase price.

Local TV content is increasingly a priority for viewers, according to TiVo’s report, “Finding the Balance in the Great Rebundling.” Eighty-four percent of people surveyed said local content like news and sports is important, while only 8% don’t watch local content. When it comes to SVOD users, the study found 54% wished their service offered free, ad-supported versions.

Hulu has acquired US streaming rights for Canadian hit series “Overlord and the Underwoods.” The family comedy, following a family whose life is turned upside down when their distant cousin, the second most-wanted villain in the universe, seeks refuge in their home after being forced into intergalactic witness protection, will land on Hulu in the summer of 2022.

Vice Media unveiled its 2022-23 programming slate. “This year we are making bigger bets and we’re responding to what our audiences have asked for,” said Nancy Dubuc, CEO of VICE Media Group. “We continue to go places others can’t and won’t.” Just a few examples: Season two of “Transnational,” a series made by and centered around trans and queer voices; “Breaking the Vote,” a video series looking at attempts to rig the 2022 election; and season two of “Planet A,” exploring solutions to climate change and environmental degradation.

Sports Video Group has teamed with YOSY Media to engage qualified students at the nation’s top Historically Black Colleges and Universities in careers in sports broadcasting, production, and other industry opportunities. The new initiative, “HBCU Bridge,” will help connect broadcasters, leagues, teams, and production companies with students who want to enter the industry via paid internships, apprenticeships, or fulltime employment.

HBO is adapting Dave Eggers novel The Every, about a woman determined to take down a massive, yet beloved, tech/ecommerce company, for TV. “In this equally terrifying and hilarious cautionary tale, Dave Eggers shows us the increasing cost of the frictionless life that technology enables,” said Amy Gravitt, EVP, HBO Programming. “As he writes, ‘Nothing described herein actually happened, though much of it likely will,’ and what better starting point for an HBO comedy script?”

Roku has three new dating offerings on tap for 2023. Social experiment “The Marriage Pact” (wt), from Maven, follows long-time singles who must fulfill or break a pact they made to marry by a certain age, while “Match Me in Miami” (wt), from Lime Pictures, is set in a matchmaking agency. Feature film “To Paris for Love: A Reality Rom Com” centers on three single friends looking for love in the City of Light. The feature comes from Hello Sunshine and Cinestar Pictures.

Three-part documentary “The U.S. and the Holocaust” makes its debut Sunday, September 18 on PBS (check local listings).
