While 55% of adults in the US get news from social media sites, 62% said social media companies have too much control over the news on their platforms, according to a Pew survey taken in July. Fifty-two percent reported getting news from Facebook, 28% from YouTube, 17% from Twitter and 14% from Instagram.

Vice Media has agreed to acquire fellow digital-centric media company Refinery29 in a transaction expected to close by the end of the year. “This is an expansive moment for independent media,” said Nancy Dubuc, CEO of Vice Media Group. “We will not allow a rapidly consolidating media ecosystem to constrict young people’s choices or their ability to freely express themselves about the things they care about most. At Vice and Refinery29, the megaphone is theirs to use and the platforms are theirs to build with us.” Refinery29 is focused on a female audience, while Vice’s is 60% male.

Political affiliation is a predictor of TV preferences, according to a new study of nine shows from IMA Research. Thirty-one percent of Democrats like Game of Thrones, versus only 14% of Republicans. Stranger Things had a similar pattern, with 34% of Democrats and 16% of Republicans liking the show. For The Simpsons it was 37%/ 24%, and NBA basketball scored thumbs ups from 42% of Dems and 25 percent of Republicands. Both sides agreed on football, with 54% liking to watch games, and more Republicans (7%) than Democrats (6%) reported liking to watch The Bachelor franchise.

Twelve Democratic presidential candidates have been invited to take the stage for the CNN- and the New York Times’- hosted one-night-only debate on October 15. Deadline to qualify was Tuesday. Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, Andrew Yang, Cory Booker, Beto O’Rourke, Tom Steyer, Amy Klobuchar, Tulsi Gabbard and Julian Castro made the cut. It will be Steyer’s first debate; the Sanders campaign canceled events “until further notice” after the Vermont senator was treated for an artery blockage.

Young Dylan got a big surprise on The Ellen DeGeneres Show: Tyler Perry and Nickelodeon have entered into a partnership to jointly develop and produce a new kids and family live-action series starring the 10-year-old rapper. “It’s a thrill to bring this new series to Nickelodeon from the incredibly talented and prolific Tyler Perry, whose track record speaks for itself,” said Nick President Brian Robbins. “Dylan is an incredibly talented 10-year-old who at heart is a relatable kid making his dreams happen.” The deal is part of Perry’s long-term pact with Viacom.

Food Network has picked up primetime competition series Girl Scout Cookie Championship for a four-episode season.
