Broadband and video services provider Altice USA plans to boost its news operation with the acquisition three-year-old, digital-first startup Cheddar for $200 million. Millennial-focused Cheddar will fold into Altice News, to be led by Cheddar founder Jon Steinberg. “Cheddar has demonstrated an innovative approach to live news while building an engaged audience, solid followership and a strong brand,” said Altice USA CEO Dexter Goei. “As one of Cheddar’s early investors, we have enjoyed our partnership with Jon and admire the entrepreneurial spirit, energy and smart disruptive mentality that he brings to the news business.” The transaction is expected to close in the next two months upon receipt of regulatory approval.

Univision Communications unveiled exclusive analysis of 2018 voter turnout data in key states, and insights into the Hispanic vote in advance of the 2020 U.S. election, at the company’s Hispanic Voters: The New Majority Makers, Lessons from 2018, Winning Strategies for 2020, event in Washington, DC. Among the takeaways: In crucial states, it’s estimated that Hispanic voter turnout doubled in 2018 vs. 2014 (13 million vs. 6.7 million); and the rate of increase in Hispanic voters in 2018 vs. 2014 was more than double that of total voters (96% vs. 42%).

Higher Ground Productions, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company in partnership with Netflix, announced the company’s initial slate of upcoming projects, including scripted, unscripted and documentary series, as well as full-length features and documentaries.  Among the series are Bloom, an upstairs/downstairs drama set in the post WWII world of fashion; Overlooked, adapted from the New York Times ongoing column of belated obituaries; preschool series Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents; and non-fiction Fifth Risk, based on a book by best-selling author Michael Lewis that portrays the unheralded work done by everyday heroes to safeguard the nation. “We love this slate because it spans so many different interests and experiences, yet it’s all woven together with stories that are relevant to our daily lives,” said Michelle Obama. “We think there’s something here for everyone – moms and dads, curious kids, and anyone simply looking for an engaging, uplifting watch at the end of a busy day.”

Smithsonian Channel is launching a celebration of man’s first step on the moon, starting with Apollo’s Moon Shot. Six-part series premieres Sunday, June 16 at 8p, exploring the Moon program through rare access to Apollo artifacts from the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. A companion augmented reality app will enable users to participate in the mission. One-hour documentary The Day We Walked on the Moon (Sunday, July 7 at 9p) relives those 24 hours through the revelations of the men and women who were there and those impacted across the globe.

With the release of OS X Yosemite later this year, Apple announced it is ceasing development of photo editing app Aperture. Users of the app will be transitioned to Photos, a new app coming next year. “Photos integrates many of the advanced photo editing features that were previously found in Aperture and will replace iPhoto on the new OS X as well,” said the company.

Apple reported that profits in the past quarter dropped due to falling iPhone sales, but results were above Wall Street expectations, with better-than-anticipated results from its new products and services.“Our March quarter results show the continued strength of our installed base of over 1.4 billion active devices, as we set an all-time record for Services, and the strong momentum of our Wearables, Home and Accessories category, which set a new March quarter record,” said Tim Cook, Apple CEO. “We delivered our strongest iPad growth in six years, and we are as excited as ever about our pipeline of innovative hardware, software and services.” Apple shares rose over 5% in after hours trading.
