A+E Networks’ contract with AT&T expires on Tuesday. While A+E warned its viewers there could be a blackout on DirecTV, Paul Buccieri, President of A+E Networks Group, told his team over the weekend that the two sides are still “far apart” when it comes to reaching a new carriage deal. “Many, including the U.S. Department of Justice, were concerned that AT&T would have the ability and incentive to discriminate against programmers like A+E Networks and others like us,” said Buccieri in a memo. “It seems that concern has become a reality.” Responded AT&T, “We are on the side of customer choice and value and want to keep these channels in our customers’ lineups.”

The WGA assured its members that its new Staffing Submission System is working as it negotiates with the Association of Talent Agents. Samples of writers not using agents are getting into the hands of showrunners looking to hire, said the guild:  “Writers are getting read. Show meetings are being set. Staffing season is unfolding without chaos – and without agents.” The system will be expanded to handle the busy week before upfronts, added the WGA.

The situation that led to Amy Powell’s ouster as President of Paramount Television last summer was “both simple and complex,” Powell told Forbes. While her firing was prompted by a phone call during which a team of white executives gave notes about black characters, “The problem was much larger than that,” said Powell. “The team supporting the TV series never should have been white executives – and not just because of the optics. Empowering writers to lead the creative process and speak to their own culture is what creates successful, authentic content. As executives, we need to trust and listen to these voices….I will never make that mistake again.”
