SeriesFest is teaming with Big Swing Productions for its Women in Writing competition. “Their mission, like ours, is to amplify these often-unknown voices,” said Randi Kleiner and Kaily Smith Westbrook, SeriesFest co-founders. Winner gets a development deal with BigSwing as well as the chance for a live read of a script with professional actors.

Freeform signed a script-to-series deal for half-hour dramedy Party Girls, inspired by the true story of the daughter of the first female leader of the Black Panther Party. Series comes from Platform One Media and will be executive-produced by Elisa Ellis (Narcos), Fishburne and Helen Sugland of Cinema Gypsy Productions (grown-ish) and Lance Krall and Peter Siaggas of Picture It Productions, with Dayna Lynne North (Insecure) set to write the pilot script and serve as executive producer/showrunner, should it go to series.

A Black Lady Sketch Show landed a series order from HBO. Half-hour comedy created by, starring and exec-produced by Robin Thede (The Rundown with Robin Thede) and exec-produced by Issa Rae (Insecure) will feature narrative sketches performed by black women and celebrity guests.
