Also of note at the VMAs: Ariana Grande dazzled with a rendition of “God Is a Woman,” which ended with her mother, grandmother and cousin joining her on stage; Madonna got no respect on Twitter for a tribute to Aretha Franklin; Jennifer Lopez gave a memorable greatest hits performance before accepting the Video Vanguard award; and Nicki Minaj performed from the Oculus in New York in a gold bodysuit, flanked by unicorns.

Facebook filed court papers saying users suing it over data given to Cambridge Analytica don’t have a case because they consented to share that data; their gripe should be with the app developer who obtained the data and sold in violation of Facebook’s policies. “Plaintiffs’ counsel has admitted that this is not a data breach case, in which users’ data was obtained against their will,” said Facebook. “And if Plaintiffs disagree that people should be permitted to consent to sharing their data with apps, their remedy is not in the courts where they have no viable claim.”

Ahead of the September 4 premiere of BET’s The Bobby Brown Story, BET Networks and brand studio WP Narrative_ unveiled an NYC art installation that’s a 30-foot replica of Brown’s head. In the interactive project, “The public physically enters his mind, they experience 3-dimensional storytelling, passing through his ephemeral thoughts, capturing his highs and lows, surrounded by projection mapped brain synapses and floating 3D holograms of key imagery from his life,” according to the press release.
