NBC News president Andy Lack notified his division that the workplace investigation launched following allegations of sexual harassment against former Today host Matt Lauer had concluded. “Like many of you, I am immensely proud of NBC News, its history, and the work we do,” said Lack. “But – stepping back from the investigation – that history also includes a time when people were not comfortable coming forward to voice complaints about repugnant behavior. That is not acceptable.” Lack then outlined steps, like new routes to raise concerns, to remedy the problem.

While the NBC inquiry unearthed no evidence that anyone in a position of authority received complaints about Lauer’s behavior prior to November 2017, or a systemic pattern of bad behavior, it did find credible the four allegations against Lauer reported in the press. Investigators also said Lauer “frequently engaged in sexual banter or joking in open working environments,” which may have contributed to a reluctance to report harassment.
