The upcoming season 6 of House of Cards will be its last. Netflix canceled the drama the day after an accusation by Star Trek Discovery star Anthony Rapp that HOC’s Kevin Spacey made sexual advances in 1986. Rapp was 14. Spacey issued a statement saying he did not remember the encounter but “If I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.” Netflix and series producer Media Rights Capital issued a statement Monday saying they were “deeply troubled” by the allegations, and in response executives from both companies met with cast and crew “to ensure they continue to feel safe and supported.” Spacey, as previously scheduled, was not on set at the time.

Series creator and former showrunner Beau Willimon said during the 4 years he worked with Spacey on House of Cards, “I neither witnessed nor was aware of any inappropriate behavior on set of off. That said, I take reports of such behavior seriously and this is no exception.”

Spacey also took the occasion to reveal that he is now choosing “to live as a gay man.” The timing of that announcement alongside the apology earned sharp rebuke from, among others, Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, who said, “Coming out stories should not be used to deflect from allegations of sexual assault.”
