Stephen Colbert
will take the Late Show crown from David Letterman when the late-night host retires next year. “Stephen is a multi-talented and respected host, writer, producer, satirist and comedian who blazes a trail of thought-provoking conversation, humor and innovation with everything he touches,” said chairman, CBS Entertainment Nina Tassler. “He is a presence on every stage, with interests and notable accomplishments across a wide spectrum of entertainment, politics, publishing and music.” Said Colbert, “I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”

Where does the Colbert hire leave Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson? Aside from richer by several millions of dollars, thanks to a succession clause in his contract, Ferguson’s late night future is unclear. “We’re having conversations,” said CBS CEO Les Moonves on Thursday. “There’s nothing to report now.” But Ferguson will be busy in any case: his syndicated game show, Celebrity Name Game, launches in the fall, and he’s exec producer of Science Channel’s upcoming I F-ing Love Science, making a 4Q14 debut.

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf called foul on HBO entering True Detective in the drama series Emmy category rather than as a mini-series. The day of the FX Upfront, Landgraf laid the blame on a “freewheeling and ambiguous situation,” with shows like FX anthology series American Horror Story and True Detective defined as having “dual eligibility,” where the producer makes the category call. It’s “patently unfair” to actors who sign on for seven years of a series, said Landgraf, to pack the drama series category with A-listers like Matthew McConaughey who aren’t bound to a multi-year contract.

The biggest skeptic at a Capitol Hill hearing on Wednesday over the Comcast and Time Warner Cable merger: Senator Al Franken (D-Minn). “I believe this deal will result in fewer choices, higher prices and even worse service for my constituents,” said the Saturday Night Live alum. Because the two companies don’t compete against each other anywhere, countered Comcast EVP David Cohen, “The transaction will not lead to any reduction in competition or consumer choice in any market.”
