After failing to come to terms over retransmission consent, Time Warner Cable dropped CBS-owned local TV stations, Showtime and other CBS cable stations in markets including New York, L.A. and Dallas shortly after 5p ET Friday, leaving the CBS channels of nearly three million subscribers  dark. “CBS has refused to have a productive discussion. It’s become clear that no matter how much we give them, they’re not willing to come to reasonable terms,” said TWC. “Time Warner Cable has conducted negotiations in a combative and non-productive spirit,” countered CBS, “indulging in pointless brinksmanship and distorted public positioning.” CBS also blocked all TWC customers from access to full episodes of CBS shows on CBS.com and mobile apps. TWC’s response: “CBS enjoys the privilege of using public owned airwaves to deliver their programming  they should not be allowed to abuse that privilege.” When will it all end? BTIG‘s Richard Greenfield isn’t holding his breath. The media analyst says that while TWC risks upsetting or losing subscribers in the bruising battle, the late summer timing  mostly reruns, no high-profile sports – is on the cable company’s side. “They have to draw a line in the sand, ” says Greenfield. “This is a once-in-a-cable-lifetime opportunity to go dark and fight retrans. I think this could be a long blackout.”
