Apple wants a bigger piece of the TV pie. Word has it the company is planning a service that would allow viewers to skip advertising, reports Variety and pay TV networks to make up for lost ad revenue. While moving into television is clearly a priority for Apple CEO Tim Cook, it’s anyone’s guess what form that will take…which has a lot of people guessing.

The Glee Project won’t make it to season three, but Oxygen says it has nothing to do with the tragic death of Glee star Corey Monteith on July 13. The decision to end the series, in which Glee stars mentor contestants vying for an arc on the series, came because Glee’s late renewal didn’t leave enough turnaround time to produce the show, says The Wrap.

Ray Donovan doesn’t just fix the problems of LA’s elite. As the main character in the new Showtime series named for him, he’s doing wonders for the net’s ratings, too. After Sunday night’s ep delivered 2.2 million viewers, Showtime renewed the drama for a second season. “Ray Donovon is on track to be our biggest season 1 show ever,” crowed David Nevins, Showtime’s president of entertainment. “We are proud and excited to pick up another season.”

Will the upcoming slate of new talkers be able to keep up with Kris Jenner? The first of a six-week test run of the momager”s new chatfest, Kris won the 3p hour in LA with a 1.3 rating (leaving Katie, Steve Harvey and Dr. Phil in the dust), and performed solidly for other Fox stations on the map. But in New York, another Fox affiliate test run bested Kris’s numbers: The Real, a panel talk show including Tamera Mowry-Housley, Jeannie Mai, Tamar Braxton, Loni Love and Adrienne Bailon improved its Kris lead-in with a 1.3 household rating. Let the games begin!

James Franco may be made for movies, but he’s no stranger to TV (don’t forget those General Hospital appearances). Now he’s set to guest star in Fox‘s The Mindy Project, starting Tuesday, September 17 at 9:30p. He plays Dr. Paul Leotard, a former model. Which sounds pretty Franco-esque to us.

Cable news got a hefty bump from the announcement of George Zimmerman‘s not guilty verdict in the Trayvon Martin trial, with almost 11 million people tuning in Saturday night for the controversial call. The View is about to get blonder. ABC confirmed its worst-kept secret yesterday: Jenny McCarthy will join the morning gabfest on Monday, September 9. The bubbly bombshell and one-time Playboy Playmate of the Year had guest-hosted The View eight times; she’ll join vet panelists Whoopi Goldberg and Sherrie Shepherd. “She has connected with our audience and offers a fresh point of view,” said Barbara Walters of her new hire. Joy Behar leaves at the end of the summer; Elisabeth Hasselbeck departed last week to join Fox News.

As Glee mourns the death of Cory Monteith, who passed away Saturday at age 31, the Fox show is also contending with how to craft the exit of one of its most popular stars. (In last season’s finale, Monteith’s character, Finn, was in college indulging in fraternity hijinks.) Monteith had survived a cast purge that included Dianna Agron, Mark Salling, Heather Morris, Harry Shum Jr. and Amber Riley; production for season five of the show was scheduled to begin end of July/early August. Meanwhile, Hollywood grapples with how to honor the actor. Matthew Morrison paid personal tribute to the star on Sunday night, dedicating his performance at NYC’s 54 Below to Monteith, and Bravo is re-airing the actor’s appearance on Inside the Actors Studio on Thursday, July 18 at 6p.

Governor Chris Christie is taking a break from New Jersey politics to make a guest turn on The Michael J. Fox Show, which premieres on Thursday, September 26. Christie has appeared on late-night TV, including a Springsteen-spouting, comedically combative spot on SNL, but this will be his first scripted comedy appearance in prime time. (We’re betting he’ll work in a Boss reference.)

Lindsay Lohan‘s mom, Dina, is on board with the eight-part reality series her troubled daughter is doing for OWN about life after rehab (Lindsay gets out of Betty Ford at the end of July). “It’s fantastic,” Dina told E! News. “If anyone is going to mentor you, it’s going to be Oprah.” As opposed to your mother…
