Rita Moreno will be honored for career and humanitarian accomplishments at the 2014 SAG Awards. “She is an extraordinarily versatile, talented and generous actor whose career is notable for courageous choices,” said SAG-AFTRA Co-President Ken Howard of the 81-year-old star. With nine Emmy noms in its pocket, Netflix‘s House of Cards is now eligible for 2014 Writers Guild of America honors, too, thanks to the group’s new guidelines making shows produced for new media eligible. “These changes in eligibility and submission guidelines reflect the evolution of distribution models in the entertainment industry,” said WGA West president Christopher Keyser and WGA East President Michael Winslip. That’s good news for All My Children and One Life to Live, too – the long-running soaps were canceled by ABC in 2011 and 2012, but live online now. The WGA also announced a new category, Quiz and Audience Participation, for writers in those genres.

ABC Family is not renewing Bunheads, the comedy/drama created by Gilmore GirlsAmy Sherman-Palladino. The season one finale aired on February 25. “We took extra time to try and find ways to bring the series back,” said a statement from the net, “but in the end it simply wasn’t possible.”

The CW is developing a spin-off of Supernatural, announced exec producer Bob Singer at Comic-Con. The new series would be based on a character to be introduced on Supernatural’s ninth season, which begins Tuesday, October 15. It’s a strategy the net used for Vampire Diaries extension The Originals, making its bow Tuesday, October 15 at 8p.

Syfy is adapting post-apocalyptic drama 12 Monkeys as a possible 90-minute pilot for a series. “We have a great pilot, we’re now fleshing out what the rest of the series would be,” Syfy president of original programming Mark Stern told the Hollywood Reporter. Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt starred in 1995’s big screen version, in which a deadly virus forces Earth’s inhabitants to live underground.

Character actor Dennis Farina died yesterday in Scottsdale, AZ after suffering a blood clot in his lung. The former Chicago police officer starred as Joe Fontana on Law & Order from 2004-2006, as well shining in numerous tough guy roles on TV and film. Adept at comedy as well as drama, he had a recurring part on Fox‘s New Girl as Nick’s charming con artist dad. “I was stunned and saddened to hear about Dennis’ unexpected passing this morning,” said Law & Order creator Dick Wolf. “He was great guy.” Farina was 69.
