Reportedly Current TV, founded by Vice President Al Gore and his business partner Joel Hyatt, is being acquired by Al Jazeera, according to NYT. If the deal goes through, Current TV will provide the pan-Arab news outlet a pathway into American homes as Current TV is available in nearly 60 million of the 100 million homes in the US through cable or satellite service. Apparently Al Jazeera will create a new channel based in New York instead of using Current to distribute its English-language channel, Al Jazeera English which is based in Doha, Qatar. The new channel may be called Al Jazeera America with 60 percent of the programming produced in the US with the other 40 percent coming from Al Jazeera English.
