NBC ordered a new eight-episode, one-hour game show series Hollywood Game Night. The series is from Will & Grace’s Sean Hayes and is based on his real-life game nights with celebrities. The premise of the show will have two contestants playing games with celebrities to compete for a cash prize. Hollywood Game Night is produced by Hazy Mills Productions, Mission Control Media and Universal Television. Hayes, Todd Milliner, Michael Agbabian and Dwight D. Smith will all serve as executive producers.

Yesterday NBC reported its chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel and his network production team were freed from captors in Syria. Engel and his team had been abducted and taken prisoner five days earlier soon after they crossed the border into Syria from Turkey. NBC News released this statement yesterday: “After being kidnapped and held for five days inside Syria by an unknown group, NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel and his production crew members have been freed unharmed. We are pleased to report they are safely out of the country.”

Nielsen revealed yesterday it will acquire its research rival Arbitron Inc. in a deal worth $1.26 billion. In the past, Arbitron competed against Nielsen in providing local television ratings. In more recent years, however Arbitron has concentrated on radio ratings and measuring out-of-home media consumption.

HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones is super-sizing the third season. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are adapting the largest of the Song of Ice and Fire novel by author George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords and as a result are producing slightly longer episodes for HBO. The next season will still have 10 episodes and each one will clock in at 56- or 57-minutes in length versus the 52-minute episodes from last season. Game of Thrones premieres season three on March 31 on HBO with the season two out on DVD on February 19.

Lifetime returns Project Runway for an 11th season with the series’ first-ever Teams Edition, premiering January 24 at 9p. Host and judge Heidi Klum is back along with Marie Claire’s Fashion Director Nina Garcia and featured judge, fashion designer Zac Posen. Tim Gunn will also return as mentor to the designers and Michael Kors will be the finale guest judge. The 11th season will also feature guest judges from film, television and music including Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Miranda Lambert, John Legend, Joan and Melissa Rivers, Emmy Rossum, Kristin Davis, Jordana Brewster and designers Rachel Roy, Tracy Reese, Chris Benz and Project Runway winner Christian Siriano. Lifetime will also air the special Road to the Runway prior to the premiere at 8p which serves as an introduction to the new competing designers.

This holiday season BET airs the Network World Premiere of Alex Haley’s epic miniseries Roots (1977) beginning this Friday at 8p. All six parts of Roots, celebrating its 35th anniversary, will air from Friday night through this Sunday, December 23. BET will continue the story with Roots: The Gift (1988) on December 24 at 11p; Roots: The Next Generations (1979) on December 25 at 8a; and Alex Haley’s Queen (1993) on December 26 at 8am.
