NBCUniversal has plans to rebrand G4 channel to become the Esquire channel, reports THR.  The NBCUniversal-owned cable network has finalized a deal with Esquire parent company Hearst Corporation to transform the gaming network to a TV destination targeting the modern, upscale male viewer.  The move is designed to capture this growing market with programming focused on cooking, travel and fashion.  The rebrand is expected to take place during the first half of 2013.

Chef Emeril Lagasse explores the scenery and local cuisine of the Sunshine State in a new series Emeril’s Florida, premiering on the Cooking Channel January 6 at 1030a.  Lagasse will cover the entire state from Northwest Florida to Orlando and St. Petersburg-Clearwater to Miami and Palm Beach highlighting the beaches, agriculture, festivals and sporting events as well as local food.  Emeril’s Florida is produced by MAT Media, LLC.

A&E Network’s series Duck Dynasty drew 6.5 million total viewers for its season finale that aired last Wednesday at 10p.  The record-breaking episode also tallied 3.9 million among A18-49; 3.8 million with A25-54; and 2.0 million A18-34 viewers.  Duck Dynasty, produced by Gurney Productions, with its season finale has become the most-watched series telecast in the network’s history among all key demos.

Taking effect January 1, Shine America begins a new exclusive, multi-year production partnership with Nigel Lythgoe Productions.  Nigel Lythgoe is the executive producer behind American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance.  In this new deal, Lythgoe will develop and produce entertainment franchises with the Shine Group for the worldwide TV marketplace.  Nigel Lythgoe Productions will continue to be based in Los Angeles.

Treat Williams (Everwood) was cast in NBC’s Chicago Fire in the recurring role as Benny, father to brash Lt. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney).  Williams will first appear in a January episode.  Sarah Shahi (Fairly Legal) will also join the series in a recurring role playing a love interest for Kelly.

Reinhold Weege, creator of the 1980s sitcom Night Court died on December 1 at the age of 62.  Night Court, which starred Harry Anderson and John Larroquette ran for nine seasons on NBC.  Prior to Night Court, Mr. Weege wrote and produced for ABC’s Barney Miller and wrote for the TV adaptations of M*A*S*H and Semi-Tough as well as for Fish, the Barney Miller spinoff.  He additionally created the short-lived sitcom Park Place and wrote and directed TV’s Nikki and Alexander.  Mr. Weege is survived by his daughters Tez and Alix and granddaughter Zoe.
